I think I can close this item out. I verified that my card reader cannot read 64GB cards! So time for a new card reader. Thanks to all who helped on this issue!!!

You mentioned two identical cards.
Do they both behave the same?
Are they really identical?

You are right. It's my older card reader! Lexar confirmed this...

If your computer supports USB 3.0 you will get a speed benefit also with a USB 3.0 card reader.

I never take my card out of the camera, I always use the USB lead provided. It seems that Nikon cameras often have problems with transferring photos to a PC.

I should repeat that the card's images appear fine in the camera.

I had a similar problem, the card was a newer style card, had two sets of contacts on the back of the card, something I had never seen before and my card reader would not read them but the camera did. I finally put them into the card reader slot on the back of my newer Mac computer and it read them fine. I just assumed that my older card reader would not read these new cards.

Had the same thing happen a while back attempting to use the SD slot on my 10 month old Win 10 computer. Hmmmmmmm. 1st time that had happen. Put the same SD in an SD reader and plugged into a USB post and there it was. Since I keep a USB/ A/V cable plugged into the computer since I use this port often on my GPS also, I'll use it more.

I had this happen a while back. IT was the type of card. Some computer card readers can not read the HD cards. Just a thought.

My lady friend had the same difficulty after changed to windows 10. She figured out 10 does things different than windows 7. Just saying.

That would be a good explanation. If that is the problem then you should order a new card reader - you can find them on eBay shipped from China for only a dollar or two; they look something like a thumb drive and plug into a USB port. In the mean time, downloading the images to the computer over a USB cable should save the pictures.

Alternatively, you might try using some recovery software intended for recovering data from an SD card. I recall that there were some recommendations for some such software on UHH, but I can't seem to put my hands on it right now.

Finally, you might check that your camera codecs and your camera's firmware are all are up-to-date.

Less than we would pay to send a letter to China. Why is that possible?

I had the same problem after I bought a new Asus laptop running Windows 10. Found a driver to download on the Realtek.Com website which solved the problem immediately.

Try https://www.piriform.com/recuva

for retrieving files. If you've formatted the card, doubt it or anything else would be of much help.

As for a card reader, most of the new ones that are about the same size as thumbdrives should be fine for reading high capacity SDHC cards.

From the discussion I believe the card reader is the fault - You can read it in the camera but the translation to the PC is the problem. My Laptop has a SD reader and it works with my 64G, but some of these external readers are cheaply built and don't have the range to a 64G card. Look for a name brand (Kingston, Sandisk etc)
