My grandson has a D90, and is a good photographer. He took this photo of a girl, but complained to me that he thought the image showed a lot of digital noise and wanted my opinion. I told him I would post it here and ask the experts, as I thought the final product was a pretty good picture. The first one is the original, the second got a slight LR treatment. The image is a JPEG. He said the details were as follows: Nikon D90 with Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, at 70mm. the exposure was set at ISO 500, and a 125th at f/2.8 in overcast conditions. He shot it in aperture priority.

Ryan would appreciate any good input here. Thanks in advance, guys.

I think that the second image with the post processing enhancements --- warmer skin tones and more contrast is much better considering the atmospheric conditions under which the photo was taken.

Without being able to look at it larger (download), it's hard to see any digital noise. Just on the image alone, I would have cropped the girl tighter. The sky in the upper portion of the image showing through the trees is too distracting. Both are OK when it comes to post. Top image is cooler than the bottom & I prefer that coolness, but the bottom image is OK as well. That really is a matter of personal preference.

I agree that the sky could be cropped out of the photo. I prefer the second image for the warmer, more saturated colors. I think the original is too grey. The light seems just a bit flat. Might have been different if the girl had been wearing some brighter colored clothes.

Ryan emailed the two images to me, so I couldn't get them any larger, although you can view it in the download and then zoom in on it.

Did you add the download link ? I swear it wasn't there before. The reason I like the 1st better is that the girl's face is too bright in the 2nd shot and it seems some of the details are a bit blown out on the Texas A & M jacket but that's just my humble opinion...

The download provision was added to the second set of pics.

I don't think there is any objectionable digital noise to worry about. I'd be curious to know what edits he did on the 2nd shot in LR.

That's what I told him, too. He didn't tell me what specific enhancements he did in LR. But for just getting into photography in a big way over the past year, he's not too bad. I think he has a lot talent, and he is passionate about it. He's 18. And he wants to upgrade to a D750 or D810! I told him he needed a well-off benefactor or else save up his money. All I could afford was the D90 I gave him.

Tell that kid that he is squirrel food if he thinks noise is an issue. The rest is spot on.

As to the post processing the skin tone is wrong. To make people (and dog) look orange is never a good idea. Changes need to be subtle.

Tell, him to get to basic, ask the girl out (if he is the same age).

I did a single (ACR) edit on the original and everything is more natural then cropping this is the way to go with two solutions one using the native ratio the other 1x1 (square). Both benefit if the 'rule of third' is applied on the right eye (picture side, not model's) more precisely the right vertical and top horizontal line meet over the eye.

I will post what I think is better (think being an evaluation nothing else) if I get the permission to do so.

You can do that. I am sure he would appreciate any constructive criticism you might have.

Oh, and the girl is his stepsister.

Ooops forget dating then...

Note that the crop is too tight here. It works for display but not for framing. The crop needs to be opened up leaving room for a mat.
