I shot this Crow or Raven in the grass at a large park.
I used 896mm total at about 25-30 feet. All black birds (Crows, Ravens, etc.) are hard to shoot and get good detail.

I like it.   REJ.

Regis this is a very sharp shot with a lot of detail. I noticed in your last few post of birds you have used the canon lens and not your tamron. From an L lens you would not expect any thing different but great shots. Along with that L lens the users knowledge witch you have. Was the lens mounted on your 6d? I have a 6d and a Sigma 150 to 500 and am very pleased with the shots and the combination. I think I might be looking for a little more reach and achieve what you have already accomplished. Super shots! I apoligize for such a long response. There is a reason. There are some beautiful white swans in our area and I would love to capture them with great detail without blowing them out.  :-D :-D

Excellent shot. Crows have rounded tails and flexible rounded wings where the feathers separate when flying. Ravens have v shaped tails and fixed pointed wings where the feathers do not separate when flying. Also raven's beaks are larger and longer and they usually have a little ruff of feathers at the top of the beak. This looks to me to be a crow.

They are very hard to photograph! Great job. In Maine I had a flock of five huge ravens that would come to pick at the feeders, but they were so incredibly skittish and extremely perceptive - even if you just peeked out the window at them they would fly off!

One of your very best, I would say. And that's saying a lot, considering how awesome your photos are!

Great shot of what looks to be an immature raven, crows don't have the hair on the bill like this one does.

You sir, know your bird bills. You are absolutely correct. Murder in Montana is everywhere. Both are interesting to observe. http://www.diffen.com/difference/Crow_vs_Raven

Regis this is a very sharp shot with a lot of deta... (show quote)

My Canon 100-400 II lens is mounted on my Canon 7D Mk2. The Canon 6D, which I used to have, is a great camera. I wanted to get more action shots so I switched over to the Canon 7D Mk2. The image is larger with great detail especially when you use the Canon 1.4x extender and the image is just as sharp with fast auto focusing.
So, with this combo, I get 896mm total. If I crop and enlarge the photo I will get over 4000mm on my computer and will still have a sharp image. Thank you, Al Davis.

I thank you, Yooper 2. I believe this is a young crow with the ruffled feathers showing, but I am not an expert on crows and ravens. We have both here in North Idaho, especially the crows which are very common. I thank you for your information.

They are , for me, the hardest bird to photograph showing good detail. The angle of the sun showing reflection from the grass gave me some detail. Both the crows and ravens are very intelligent birds. They look at me as though they are sizing me up for some food.
Thank you, SB, for your nice comment.

They were running around the grass sprinklers trying not to get wet while searching for food. So, they got a little wet and ruffled up their feathers a bit. Thank you, hb3, for your nice reply.

Thank you, Montana Trace. I'm not an expert on birds. I have to consult my reference bird books once in a while.
