Covered Bridge - Hebron, Ohio...

Racking my creative juices for an image of wood when this lovely lady bug flew down on my newly finished teakwood table. Luckily, I had my iPhone in my pocket. Didn't take the chance it would be there when I returned. So, what's the best camera? The one you have with you.

An interview with DWU2,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I think I got my first camera in 1957. It was a plastic box that used 620 film. In my teens I used an Argus C3. I bought my first SLR, a Canon AE-1 in 1976, and my first DSLR, an original Canon Digital Rebel, in 2003.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I'm self taught, but have read on photographic topics extensively.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Many, though not all, good pictures are made, not taken. They are the result of planning and the photographer's vision.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I use Canon gear - currently I use a 7d MK II, with a variety of lenses. I use a Sigma 10-20 for landscape, Tamron 90 MM for macro, and a Tamron 150-500 for BIF. When I'm out for landscape or nature, I either carry a Think Tank backpack or a Tenba messenger bag. I use a Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I shoot entirely in RAW format and process in Lightroom. I'm beginning to get my hands around Photoshop CC - before that I used Paintshop Pro. After I upload the photos and do an initial screen and delete bad shots, I find I can pretty much go from top to bottom on the Lightroom Develop module screen. I sometimes use plugins (NIK, Photomatix, Helicon Focus).

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
My dad got me started in photography. I think I was attracted to photography because I spent my career in tech and needed a creative outlet. The winning shot is an old, restored covered bridge adjacent to the state fish hatchery in Hebron, OH.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I wouldn't change a thing.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I didn't initially understand the exposure triangle until one day I read a book and a light came on for me.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Lightroom - I spend as much time there as with my camera.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I have a Tamron 18-270 that I like to use when I can't carry other lenses, because of its versatility.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Sometimes I take a reflector, sometimes an LED light, and occasionally a ring light.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Hiking, reading, working with computers.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I haven't established a web site - I just retired, and plan to do so now that I am beginning to have some time.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Be kind to the other Hedgehoggers. Some aren't as experienced, some aren't as articulate, some forget or don't know to check if questions have been answered. But it's a nice community of people. I've been helped many times - try to pay forward.
