We are on the Channel Island of Jersey for a couple of weeks and not to far from our house is the church of St Matthew. It dates back to 1840 when it was built as a 'chapel of ease' so that the inhabitants of the Millbrook district would no longer have to travel up the hill to the ancient parish church of St Lawrence.

THE GLASS CHURCH
Lady Florence Trent (the wife of Jesse Boot of the Boots stores chain) commissioned Rene Lalique to refurbish the church in 1934 and his Art Deco Masterpiece is the most beautiful glass creations I have seen, and sadly its almost impossible to capture the full beauty of his work in pictures.
I would urge anyone visiting these beautiful island to visit St Matthew's.

Were lucky, we have relatives on the Island so we've been over for the last three years, but this is the first year we have spent time looking for the places not on the usual visitor trail, for instance yesterday ,while looking further into the Boot family history we visited another church in St Brelade's where the family have a burial area, and discovered the church had the most unusual voluted ceilings Ive seen in any church, also I noticed on a small house near the church yard gate a plaque dedicated to a surrealist photographer called Claude
Cahun 1894-1954, and when I googled him I was completely amazed at the story told by the various repots therein, I won't say more as a feel others should read it for themselves, that said Im of to St Helier today to research him more as I think there are some of his works displayed somewhere and also to get some books on his amazing life.
