Beautiful shots of a remarkable church with Lalique sculptures. It must be an extraordinarily beautiful church.

Cheers S1, --the church its self is very minimalistic as it was built purely to elevate a long uphill walk for the coastal folk to the main church up the hill, so very basic a functional, and would no doubt have stayed that way and possibly been destroyed by now had it not been for the incredible refurbishment works by Laligue, which has transformed the interior into a Art Deco masterpiece, and although its now priceless its main purpose is still to function as a church to the community.
Thanks a lot for have in a peep, Its always good to her from you.

Geoff

We are on the Channel Island of Jersey for a couple of weeks and not to far from our house is the church of St Matthew. It dates back to 1840 when it was built as a 'chapel of ease' so that the inhabitants of the Millbrook district would no longer have to travel up the hill to the ancient parish church of St Lawrence.

THE GLASS CHURCH
Lady Florence Trent (the wife of Jesse Boot of the Boots stores chain) commissioned Rene Lalique to refurbish the church in 1934 and his Art Deco Masterpiece is the most beautiful glass creations I have seen, and sadly its almost impossible to capture the full beauty of his work in pictures.
I would urge anyone visiting these beautiful island to visit St Matthew's.

2- The main Alter

Cheers Rob, and thanks for taking a peep,-- I only wish I could capture a 1/4 of its beauty, its such amazing glass and only with the naked eye can it be fully appreciated,

Geoff

Thanks very much David--That's a thought, they are such large and unique works, I imaging they must be priceless? as far as I know there is certainly nothing else like anywhere, so how would one value it?

I would go with priceless as they obviously cannot be replaced. That's something else I need to add to the bucket list of things to see! Thanks for sharing.

This is the third year we've been over, and only this time did we find out about it by chatting to a bloke fishing on the other side of the island, if it hadn't been for him we almost certainly wouldn't have know about the place, the islanders don't seem to push it as a visitor attraction.
