  Yes. None of your business. I can't quite figure out why you went to the funeral. If you were more interested in critiquing the photographer, why did you attend the funeral. I think you missed the boat on this one. JMHO

My favorite funeral shot is when they open the box sit up the cadaver and the family gathers around and poses for a shot with a drink in the hand of the deceased!

Some think that is tacky but, what the hell!

So my friend Mikie died some years ago. Very smart guy, was acing classes with ease in Queens College while we struggled. Always had a tough life. At his funeral, in Greenpoint, we all went outside, Artie produced the pint bottle of whisky and we all had a drink, some 10 of us, and saved 1/4 of the bottle. Artie went in and slipped it in his jacket for his trip to heaven. This was typical for our crew. His mom was slightly out of whack. always had been. She is straightening out his jacket and finds the bottle. As is typical of her, she goes nuts. We just stood there and watched her. Said a prayer for Mike, but one for her too cause she needed it more. I certainly hope someone does that to me. I already told my wife burn me and flush my ashes to the city recycling center and told my oldest, have a gathering with drinks and food and ply '10,000 Miles' by Mary Chapin Carpenter.

The only people with the right to speak on this matter are the ones who hired her. If they were happy or unhappy with what she was doing or the results they could speak up. For all that you know, she could have been a family member or friend that was providing this service as a favor.

Let it be.

I attend the funeral of a friend's father the other day. They had hired a photographer to shoot the events of the day. Two things about this photog--she wore a bright green T-shirt which seemed to be un-professional. Second, she used the pop-up flash on her Nikon camera all the time for every shot.

These two things did not appear to be professional or give photographers as a whole a good example. I talked to several people and they mentioned that flash was distracting during the service and at the reception.

I did not talk with that photog as it was a funeral and I did not want to risk creating a scene. I will talk to my friend later about this photog. Would you have said something to the photographer and/or the family?

Oh yeah, I would definitely send her an after the fact email telling her exactly what I think of her lack of professionalism. But, that's just me.

A similar thing happened at an anniversary party we attended. Apparently the "pro" came highly recommended and had a legitimate website along with references. He showed up in a wrinkled shirt not tucked in, an entry level camera with an 18-55 kit lens and no external flash. He posted the images to his site with the hope of selling a few shots. Most were dark and several were blurry. Composition was atrocious (in my opinion). As written here, you bite your lip and move on. Perhaps more easily understood if the photographer were a friend or relative doing a favor, but this was not the case.

I am a widower. Having someone critique or criticize something like that when I was in so much pain already would have been cruel and unthinkable. Let it be.

Being a pro photographer's just too hard. For $27 I can have a new shingle made and the next day I'm gonna be a brain surgeon.

Funny, another thread on how folks should behave.

Why are you (and many other) get so uptight about what is already a field crowded with folks with no experience?

Just read the damned threads about "What should I take to shoot my first wedding?" "What flash do I use to shoot a group?"

Examples of this exist all over UHH. It demonstrate the current state of affair on the 'professional field".

And you want to appear surprised by the loonies? Give me a break.

I hate to agree with you but I do. The field is over-crowded with people who bought a low-end NiCan DSLR and want to be photographers.

Chap, all the guys with the big guns and portfolios wanted $5 000 just to shoot that funeral. The girl was hired because for $500 she got the shots and tirelessly put in 50 hours of PP and everybody liked the shots.
Now in ten years she's gonna be be the best wedding Photog in your county and come highly recommended to you when one of your granddaughters gets married.
She'll give you $3000 OFF her usual $10K price, because she remembers fondly(and it will always stay with her) that at her first paying gig, that nice man Chap John was the ONLY one that was nice to her and told her she was doing a good job and to keep up the good work!!!
Chap, you were nice to her weren't you??

And in ten years after your friend Father is long gone, only the memories in your heads will remain, along with her pictures. ;-)

Good point: "Why are you (and many other) get so uptight about what is already a field crowded with folks with no experience?"

This citizen learned a time ago that he cannot go around correcting others. I'd have no time left to live my own life.

So take note of the inappropriate behavior of others, and vow not to engage in it yourself.

BTW: The term "professional photographer" only means the individual doing the photography makes money at it. The term takes no account of skill level or production quality or lasting value.
