If the 6D has a similar menu to the 7D2, there is a provision for altering the image naming convention-it'll be in the "yellow section" of the menu in the area dealing with storage. I have mine set to _D2_xxxx to differentiate between 2 different cameras.

I use a program called "Better File Renamer" and love it.
After I copy the files to my computer I can then rename all the files with anything I want to set up, ie.

Mary_wedding_001_01_23_2015.jpg
Mary_wedding_002_01_23_2015.jpg
etc.
Very fast, very easy to use.

I have lightroom set up to import files into a directory structure that is set up by year and month. I also have a practice of resetting the photo count to 0000 in 1 Jan. since LR works by date and time, a rollover mid-month is not a big deal. I have used having the date appended (or prepended) to the file names, but didn't like the file name lengths, so I stuck with the img... File names sorted by year and month as a reasonable approach.

Press Menu button on camera.
Select first wrench icon
Select File numbering, press and make your choice.
I have mine set to Auto reset.
I format my SD card in camera after transfer file completion.
I import to lightroom and allow for auto numbering with no dups.

Good afternoon all, I went over 9,999 shots on my 6d yesterday and noticed when I downloaded my pictures last night I am back to img_001, and on from there.

Is there something in the menus that I can change these or do you set something up to rename on the way in to the computer when you download them?

Thanks for your thoughts and answers!!!!

As a Canon dslr owner I can tell you no, there is nothing you can change - that's the nature of the counting system.

What I do is, as apparently you have done, number your shots in succession. When you reach 10,000 the numbers, as you've noticed, will roll over and re-start.

What I'm doing is making a note of that 10,000 and let the camera start again. Do that and you'll have an accurate record of your shutter count - at least pretty accurate.

================================

Your Camera (any camera) "operator's handbook" will explain this in good order. However.... This is What I Do. (Note that I stated What I Do = Others here will and Should have their own way to do this.)

On December 31st, or so - or when the need arises - I Manually reset the File Numbers for the Up-Coming Year.
Some photographers prefer to organize by "event" or what is shot (i.e.= landscape, wildlife, still life, weddings - ect. ect.).
I catalogue by Year - Month - Day of shooting. I capture in RAW, and I keep just about everything that is usable for future edits.
I store my RAW files in three (3) places...
1.) a 4 tet Hard-Drive, Some DVD's, and my portable 500 Gig drive that travels with me with another 500Gig drive for back-ups of the RAW files out of the camera's memory card.
2.) I have another drive at my sister's house that stores my RAW files as well.
3.) Another set of DVD's of the RAW files in my safe.

THEN my last resort is another 500 Gig Drive for the Printable files of which have sold in the past and are considered by the general public as "Profitable".

NOW!!!!

What I do is because I had a fire some years ago (1974) that took Every Negative that, I and my family, ever took since age 12. I began at age 15 in my serious endeavor to be a Photographer. So... Because of the fire, I like to NOT have a loss again - Ever.

The Cataloging and the way that YOU will secure Your Work is up to you. I suggest to READ everything on the saving of photo image files and work-up your own plan of how to save and number and reset the camera's file numbering system.

Good Luck.

Nope, it cycles back at 9999. There isn't anything you an do about it except make it reset even sooner, or make it store the next 10k pictures in a new folder. (I can't imagine keeping 10K+ images on a card.)

I handle this (as well as having multiple camera bodies which produce files whose names all look like "IMG_xxxx") by replacing the "IMG_" part of the name with, for example with my 6D, "6D-1_" and add a couple of zeroes before the native number. (When the odometer rolls over, I'll add "01", etc. in stead of "00".) So my raw file names look like "6D-1_001234.CR2" when I'm done with them. The raw images get stored just like that. Any jpegs or other pictures generated in-camera or otherwise derived from them usually wind up with that name in parentheses after the title and date info.

BTW, I use a freeware program called "Advanced Renamer" for this and other bulk renaming.

In camera file naming is fully explained in the manual, so this answer is correct if limited.

And I really didn't see anything more useful in your answer

Really, folks! I'm sure 99%+ of the questions on this forum could be answered by a manual or reference someplace if one took the time to do the research! Give the person a break, either answer the question or "lurk" and ignore it!

This is a forum for learning and helping each other!

(by the way, the little 4" x 5" manual that comes with cameras is not the easiest thing to do research in . . . certainly heard comments about these "manuals" before!)

I think "should be in the manual" is a perfectly fine answer. You can choose to read the manual, or go through the process of asking other people who have read it to explain it to you.

I think most would choose to read it for themselves.

Now that's a bunch of BULL. I sure hope you NEVER ask a question, since everything ever asked here could be found elsewhere and the same condescending remark could be made to everyone about anything.
Bull, do you know for a fact that the answer is in the manual and he didn't look??
If not, maybe you should hold your beak before you parrot!!
Some people are glad to help, even when the guy has the answer tattoed on his forehead, backwards, and has only but to look in the mirror!!
Geez......

In the 6D manual, it's all around page 136.
