Good afternoon all, I went over 9,999 shots on my 6d yesterday and noticed when I downloaded my pictures last night I am back to img_001, and on from there.

Is there something in the menus that I can change these or do you set something up to rename on the way in to the computer when you download them?

Thanks for your thoughts and answers!!!!

Should be all explained in your manual.

I rename during import, never checked what I can do in camera.

Check the preferences and setup for whatever import program you're using, should be some choices there.

In camera file naming is fully explained in the manual, so this answer is correct if limited.

And I really didn't see anything more useful in your answer

The camera counts 0001 to 9999 and restarts. On the card, you should see multiple folders so that next 0001 image file is placed into folder 02 and so forth. I don't have a camera nor manual handy to give the exact details that are found in the manual. If you don't want to read the manual ... you don't seem to want to help yourself ... Just as the camera maintains separate folders, you should too if you continue to use the default numbering scheme. Separate as when you copy to your computer. The Canon software typically defaults to a date stamp for the target folder onto the computer. There are simple rename commands that rename the original or maybe just rename the output if batch processing your post processing results. You need to decide what is best for your needs and / or the software you own. You can't increase the number beyond 9999. Rather, you can change the names for the text part (IMG to XXX) or create unique folder names on the card.

I think "should be in the manual" is a perfectly fine answer. You can choose to read the manual, or go through the process of asking other people who have read it to explain it to you.

I think most would choose to read it for themselves.

Easiest way around this problem is to add the date when you import them. i.e. img_9990_2015_02_01. Never have to update again.

I don't know if Canon lists every shot by number. The only numbering that I have seen is in each individual file. A download of each session loads in an individual file. I guess if you have 9999 shots stored on the card and download it all at once it would be numbered and stored a one file. Don't know if this helps but that hes been my experience.

I'm sure it is, however, I am travelling and have limited access to internet and my copy of the manual (electronic) is 1500 miles away.

I really don't know why you bother to post, when I get home I will spend some time to view your other posts and see how useful they were for others.

Thanks for your reply, I think I will make sure I use the dates in my saves going forward. I sure am glad I don't have 10000 shots on one card, I wouldn't even want to think about how long that would take to download on USB2 connection, lol

Thanks for your reply and info, it is very helpful. I will make sure I use the date in the folder names. I will check and see how to create unique folder names on the card as well.

If you create a new folder to down load your files into the file number can be repeated. ie Folder "jack's Birthday" file "IMG_111" or Folder "Mary's birthday", file "IMG_111"
Hope that helps.
