Which one of the two is it that you least understand?

Most of the greatest fine art museums around the world collect and exhibit photographs. But I guess you know better.

Study these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Steichen

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rembrandt ... of
course Rembrandt was a painter, but his use
of light is sensational and worth studying for photography.

At the beginning of the 20th century Eddie S and Alfred Steiglitz
were using cameras to create art. Prior to that, virtually the sole purpose of cameras was to create visual records.

Some would argue that the work done by Eddie S for Vogue and
Vanity fair is commercial photography, not art. To those I say look
at his landscapes, cityscapes, nudes, bridges et al.

Imho, I reckon the work he did for fashion magazines was fine art
even if it was "commercial".

When you say you're "interested in fine art" photography, do you mean that you are interested in viewing and studying other peoples' fine art images, or do you mean that you are interested in making fine art images yourself.

If the first case, there are many books. Spend some time on Amazon.

If the second case... all I can say is "lots of luck"... it will be you and about 10 million other people.

There are basically two kinds of photography, one is when the photographer makes something intended to please someone else. Commercial photography is an example. For portraits, that is when the subject tells the photographer what they want, and the photographer tries to comply.

Fine Art is when the photographer makes a photograph to please the photographer. For portraits that might well mean that you hire a model! You tell the model what you want, not the other way around.

Duke Ellington when asked what is good jazz, said he didn't know because he thought there was just good music without the categorization. Does this relate to photography?

 Since you brought it up, I think I'll put on some Duke--maybe with Ella--right now.

1G, I think we all know what you mean.
But, let's not confuse what "fine art" is.
If you are hired to shoot a birthday party, its commercial photography. If you shoot the SAME birthday party, NOT for pay, it's "fine art photography" .
My suggestion would be, if you have the time, is to enroll in a college Pro photography curriculum. If you are serious, that's what I would recommend! Good luck. ;-)

Michelangelo was paid to paint the ceiling of the Sistine chapel.
Is that work not fine art SS?
