We get lots of questions like this, and they always lead me to read articles on the topic. The general consensus is that, comparing modern cameras, you will not get a better image from a smaller sensor. The question is, will you be able to see the slight reduction in quality? Probably not. I posted a comparison last week of a full frame Nikon D810 vs an Olympus 4/3, and the difference was minor.

The advantages of the smaller, lighter gear, may outweigh any advantage in image quality you'd be losing.

I asked a similar question, and am still wondering whether to change. I already have the a6000, but was wondering about the A7 in one of its three forms, or the A7II. I shall watch what people reply to you with interest!

Mirror less offer many good options.

Be sure to study the lens availability for any new system you consider: quality, size/weight, and how much is available. Some systems haven't developed as full array as others and with some the lenses are not significantly smaller than DSLR.

If possible, handle a camera before buying. The way it feels in your hands and the way buttons are placed can make a big difference. For most of us a camera system is a big investment. Careful study pays off.

I have the Sony A7R. Can't get much smaller or lighter and their 35 and 55mm primes take great shots.

Not knowing the things you like to shoot...if you go to my website and look at pretty much anything after December 2013 (November 2014 would be a good general folder to look at), all these shots were taken with a m4/3 camera. Consider both m4/3 Sony and fuji cameras when evaluating a switch. IQ is really close on all of them. It really boils down to fit in your hand and the available (and future) lenses.

I, too, am considering the same question! I don't have the a6000 yet, but I'm saving up for it; then I need to decide on whether or not to keep my Canon t3i.
Anxious to follow this thread and see others' opinions. :)

Full frame to a smaller sensor will only affect image quality if you do large prints. Larger sensors allow pixels to function better in general, but if you are displaying images on computer screens etc., there will be no noticeable drop in quality, unless you went w/ a cheap point and shoot w/ plastic glass. Sony makes good cameras, inheriting Minolta optics and electronics. Speaking of which, I tested my old Minolta-Rokkor lenses against Leica Summicron, Nikon and Canon and my Rokkors were in some cases better. Rokkor built lenses for Leica, so that gives you an idea of how good Minolta was.

Also, the focus on the A6000 is lightening fast.

Keep your favorite Canon lens and get an adapter for your a6000. You won't be sorry. I'm getting great results with an a6000 and Nikon glass.

I'm selling my Sony NEX-7 and replacing it with a Nikon D5300. The Sony is a great camera but I have better lenses for the Nikon so decided to forgo the weight advantage of the Sony. My main reason is that my real camera is also a Nikon and I get annoyed by switching back and forth between the control schemes. Both are OK but they differ and my brain and fingers aren't flexible enough to accommodate easily.

I'll get better pictures with the Nikon because I have better lenses for it. I know that for sure because I got better pictures with it's predecessor D5100. But the Sony takes great pictures also.

I'm going to change my shorts.
I think I'll go for some blue ones instead of the "tighty whities".

You only need to please yourself. ;)
Enjoy! :-D

Yes, but aren't the blue one really small and have no mirrors?

I had to smile to myself when I read "real Camera". You don't consider the Sony a "real" camera?

Check out photos of the new FF Sony lenses to be announced tomorrow (Friday) at the CP+ show. They are posted on the "sonyalpharumors" website.

The lenses are huge. Disproportionately massive. I've been waiting for a Sony FF superwide zoom, and was looking forward to the new 24-240mm. Until I saw the picture of it this morning. It's so big as to remove all the advantages of the A7 in terms of size and weight.

The idea of the Sony A7 line has been great. But the lenses, not so much. Very limited selection, high prices, and now, very bulky.

I'm glad I kept my Canon gear while waiting for a good, all purpose Sony zoom. I may have made a mistake with Sony, and recommend that you think long and hard before committing.
