The new Nikon 300 mm f4 lens

Nikon has launched a new 300 mm f4 lens that weighs only 1.6lb and has a new technology to eliminate chromatic aberration.
The best thing about this lens is that instead of pressing more glass into a lens barrel to control chromatic aberration Nikon is using different types of lens elements and fewer lens elements to do this with the added bonus of light weight lens and probably more light passing the lens. And it has 4 stops in vibration reduction (VR). Anybody interested in this lens??

You can get it at B&H, see here http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1111442-REG/nikon_2223_af_s_nikkor_300mm_f_4e.html

In comparison the Canon 300 mm f4 L lens is 2.6lb so it is quite a difference in weight.

Is it time for Canon now to catch up with Nikon in the lens department or shall we wait for field testing on this new Nikon 300 mm lens

No, not really. It is actually big news when Nikon launches a 300 mm lens that is only half the weight of the lens it replaces. So here is obviously something more than the usual "small steps" development happening in the lens department at Nikon. And if this lens is sharp and good then other manufacturers will follow. I have seen very many here on UHH complain about the weight of their camera gear so it is a very important factor.

But of course it is also fun to slam this in the face of the competitor's fanboys

Would that be a heavy duty Canon camera lens case?

The reduction in weight alone would perk my interest, if it stands up in field tests it would work well on a Dx like my D7100, and a wonderful addition for the full frame.

Well, for me, I've got other things I'd prefer to purchase for $2K. In addition, my 28~300 works just fine and quite sharp. One f-stop is easily compensated by simply changing the ISO.

I actually know someone who recently purchased this lens. Since it is a prime lens you lose the zoom capability however it is clearly a step above its predecessor. My friend loves it!

While not as sharp or light or auto, I am using a Nikkor 300mm f/4.5 AI-s lens which set me back $200. Stopped down to f/8 or better the results are very acceptable. A great long lens to use while saving up for a newer version.

Nikon would have been better served by making a 400mm f5.6 or 4.7 ! !
and yes, Nikon is finally using Flourite in their lenses - something Canon has been doing for 25 years now !

I am a Nikon shooter, but it's my understanding that it's Nikon catching up with Canon in this case and using Canon technology to build a 300mm lens that is 148mm long. Pretty cool.

I had this very lens back in the day, until all my stuff got stolen. Didn’t use it much, but those times when I needed it, such as at air shows, it was the only lens that could do the job. Wish I still had it.

"This lens is not yet released..."

From Amazon.

Maybe your friend has the older, heavier version? Or some special arrangement with Nikon?

I just pre-ordered it. Been waiting for this sucker for awhile. The light weight is icing on the cake.
