It's not fluorite that's new to Nikon. They have used fluorite in previous lenses. The new (to Nikon) element is a Fresnel element. And Canon has been using them in some of their lenses for some time, as others have stated.

But a sharp telephoto lens at half the weight of its predecessor, with (reportedly) remarkable VR is exciting news.
