Nikon Refurbished Bodies

Over the years I have had a number of Nikon bodies, some bought new, some used. Some have greatly exceeded the shutter actuation while others have had shutter replacements well before they have reached this.

The published shutter actuation value is a suggestion of what the camera can do not a guarantee that the body will reach this. For example a D200 (shutter count indication 100,000) had a shutter count of 220,000 when I finally sold it, and I believe it is still going strong, whereas a D3S had to have a shutter replacement at 55,000 (which was done under warranty - the advertised value was 300,000).

So for the right deal on a refurbished camera you may find that worrying about the shutter count is perhaps not the key criteria to look at.

Can any Hoggers out there advise on the average number of shutter actuations typically found on refurbished Nikon bodies sold from Nikon USA? There is a sale, going on right now and I may just pull the trigger on a new body but their chat line told me they did not have that information available. So, I figured I would check with some of you who may have purchased from them before and see what your experience has been. There is a short window for this opportunity so I am hoping someone out there will be able to comment on this rather quickly. Thanks.

My refurb D7100 was like new and had less than 150 actuations on the shutter and most if not all of those were taken in the Nikon facility. How did I know that most were taken by Nikon? It came with a class 10 32gb SD card in slot number 1! Nice bonus with lousy images taken from around the tec's work bench.

A little over a month ago I purchased a re-furbed D7100 from Cameta Camera. After taking several test shots, I uploaded a pic to shuttercount.com and it came up with a whopping 39 actuations on the shutter.

Even if it had a couple thousand, it would be a drop in the overall bucket as this camera is rated for 150,000 actuations.

It also came with a 1-year warranty from Cameta which was another huge plus.

This is my second refurb and I have no qualms whatsoever about doing it again.

My Nikon D800 from Adorama had 5000. if I had found out in time I would have returned it. New Camera five year warranty refurbished 90 days. I would rather have the warranty.

Nikon camera bodies are warrantied for 1 year not 5 unless you buy a 3rd Party add-on warranty

IF you're purchasing from Nikon USA, or B&H, or Adorama, I would have NO reservations about ordering a refurb. I would NOT buy one from Joe's Cameras & Janitorial Service. Most refurbs have seen either no actual use, or extremely limited. And the fact that they're gone over thoroughly by trained techs, and not just "line workers" they can actually be better than a new one.

I bought my D5100 as a refurb from B&H and have had no trouble whatsoever with it. I couldn't tell it from brand new.

From what I've heard here before the shutter count is usually very low and have heard of some even like,... new. You can't go wrong with a Nikon refurb.

My refurbished D810 came with less than 10. I took a few shots before looking at the data so I'm not sure, exactly. The only sign of use was a scuff on the plastic BM12 monitor cover.

I wonder if the camera data gets reset before Nikon tests it after repair. I can't believe that Nikon replaces the shutter in every camera they refurbish. Does anyone know what their process is?

Anyway, I have never had a problem with Nikon refurbished products.

You'll love it. I have the D600 and it's great. It fits my hand well and has a good feel to it. It also takes great photos too. You didn't mention a lens, but the 24-85mmVR that is available with it, is really crisp for a so-called "kit-lens." At the short end(24mm) it's at a aperture of f3.5. That'll grab lots of light and it's good all the way to 85mm which is at f4.5. It's not a f2.8 but it's close and look at the price difference. I added the 70-300mmVr too. But, that's another story. Need any help with it, PM me or post something. There are lots of D6x0 shooters here.
Good Luck.

Don thanks, and I may be reaching out to you on this. Sounds like a good deal and if there are any available this morning, I will place an order. By the way, I bought the 24-85 mm VR last month in anticipation of slowly adding full frame lenses for my eventual purchase. So far, I love that lens. Also have a 50mm 1.8 lens that can be used with an FX body. Next step with be something with a little more reach. Thinking about a 70-200mm f4, but I will need to save a while for that.

Don't forget the Nikon and the Tamron 70-300mm are both full frame and more economical, either can be had for $300-$375 on eBay, the may not be the caliber of the 70-200 f/4 but a nice lens for the money, until you can get the 70-200.

I purchased lenses and bodies from B & H, never had any issues. If you play with the stuff you buy and are not satisfied & H would take returns in original packaging without any questions. If you cannot afford new or are jus starting buy refurbished.

After numerous attempts at navigating the Nikon USA Store web site, I was able to place an order for a refurbished D610 body and will patiently await the delivery of it sometime next week. The price for the refurbished body was $1349 and change so I did not want to pass that up. I had planned to but this early next year but the price was so attractive, I did not want to wait. Thanks to all for your feedback on refurbished bodies.
