Don thanks, and I may be reaching out to you on this. Sounds like a good deal and if there are any available this morning, I will place an order. By the way, I bought the 24-85 mm VR last month in anticipation of slowly adding full frame lenses for my eventual purchase. So far, I love that lens. Also have a 50mm 1.8 lens that can be used with an FX body. Next step with be something with a little more reach. Thinking about a 70-200mm f4, but I will need to save a while for that.

Great. Suggestion.... Do yourself a favor and get the Nikon 70-300mmVR. It's selling inexpensively and does a heck of a job with good reach. Now with only 2 lenses you have out to 300mm covered.

Can any Hoggers out there advise on the average number of shutter actuations typically found on refurbished Nikon bodies sold from Nikon USA? There is a sale, going on right now and I may just pull the trigger on a new body but their chat line told me they did not have that information available. So, I figured I would check with some of you who may have purchased from them before and see what your experience has been. There is a short window for this opportunity so I am hoping someone out there will be able to comment on this rather quickly. Thanks.

We just had a LOOOONG thread on this subject (which I instigated)....I think the bottom line is to conside where the bulk of refurb cameras are coming from. They are returns, DOA's, open box, samples, shelf items in stores, etc......Very few of them are going to come from pros who have beat them to death over a long life. Therefore, the shutter actuation count is a minor consideration. Just about all are going to have VERY low counts. I would not hesitate to buy a refurb camera body from one of the many reputable dealers, or even from a Big Box or online store...Once you get it, they first thing you can do is check the count. If it does not please you, avail yourself of the 30, 60 or 90 day return policy that they all have...I was skeptical when I started my thread. Later, I am a believer....When you buy a used camera that has the rubber worn off it is when you should worry....LOL

There seems to be a large group of refurb users here on the Hog. That should be a good sign. What has to be the most over-used question concerns the shutter count of refurbed bodies. When my refurbed Canon arrived it gave itself away, the box was marked as such. The camera could have passed for new, not a mark on it. With a newly charged battery I went through several different test scenarios and could not find any flaws. For any man's logic, I possessed a new camera. When asked the immortal question I thought, "Who cares?" Canon claims a certain number of actuations and if I can ever possibly get anywhere near that number, I will not care about anything other than breathing. I am having one hell of a great time trying, but there are a lot of clicks to go.

I just love irrefutable logic. At the end of the day it's just a number and about as relavant as the size of anything else in our world.

You know, you are absolutely correct that this should be a minor consideration. I should be more concerned that everything is in good working condition, and if not, I have at least 90 days for Nikon to make it right. I am so looking forward to the delivery of this new body, with a clear conscience over my purchase due to many comments made by the good people on this site. Thanks. Come on, brown truck!

Everyone in my family always asks me what I want for Christmas. I am asking for B&H gift cards to help me whittle down my wish list. The 70-300mm lens may just go on that list, as I have heard high praise for this. I am sure it would serve me well as a developing photographer and as I grow my skills and knowledge, I can add to the toys. Can't wait for the brown truck to arrive.

FYI, Cameta has the 70-300 refurbished for 399.95 now.
