I'll have about nine days
One great opportunity is La Jolla Cove. On the ocean, you can get great photos of seals as well as wind surfers. Google this for more info. We went there and it is a nice, pleasant place. La Jolla, the town is quite upscale. Plenty of Bentleys. We were with my daughter and her family, so we didn't have the opportunity, but it would be a great place to window shop.
Also, Coronado Beach in the nearby town of Coronado is considered the 3rd best beach in the U.S. Parking at that time of year will be available right next to the beach (we were there in October). The Hotel del Coronado at the end of the beach is about $400/night. Quite nice and picturesque. The town of Coronado is worth driving around, as well. Multi-million dollar homes just off the beach. It's worth spending a few hours there. Also, there is a Naval Station at Coronado, so you'll see Navy guys running up and down the beach, as well as helicopters flying down the shore. Coronado is an island, so you access it by taking this cool arching bridge.

Loc: Kelowna, British Columbia (between trips)
Take the Olde Towne Trolley around the city for a taste of what is available. Lots of great sea scape shots and surfer dudes showing off. Great place for any kind of photography.

Or you can continue down I5 until you come to Palm Ave south and follow that (route 75) to Coronado and go back across the bridge back to I5.

Red in 9 days, you will probably get to know every man, woman and child in SD!!
I'm about to horrify Traveler, but I'm going to suggest you go to either Ensenada or possibly as far as San Felipe/Puertecitos.
Personally, for me, life's too short to spend much of it in SD. True, I wouldn't hang out much in TJ, but boy is 9 days a long time in SD
Just saying. ;-)

Which means you could also drive up the Pacific Coast Hwy and back if you wanted to. If you do, be sure to overnight in Carmel-by-the-Sea. There is a 17 mile private stretch of drive along Big Sur that we missed that is supposed to be some of the best driving along the coast.
Actually, I've never considered SD a tourist destination.
The only two things I've ever found really interesting are the Aerospace Museum and the Midway. Both have unique photo ops. Also the whale migration is starting about now as well. ;-)

If you're not visiting family, and DO have a chance to go up the Pacific Coast Hwy, San Francisco is at the other end. Lots of Photo Ops there.
I was just thinking about this very thing...
Are you visiting relatives? Friends?
My advice?
Ask them where they want to go, and spend time with them making memories and then recording moments of those memories by photographing them.
You can buy pictures of any landmark there is, taking one more picture of the sea lions at La Jolla won't mean anything in the end...and when you get through culling through the 1000 images you snapped while there, you will come out with 100, and of that 100; 10 will have a sentimental meaning to you....those are the ones to keep.
Stay in the moment...take pics when you can...but first and foremost..."be" there.
This video that I'm going to link to below has made a lasting impression on me for sure; I'm going to SD in December and I won't be taking images of sea lions, monuments, or other landmarks.
Just something to think about.

Also don't miss Old Town San Diego.
