I am dominantly right handed but can be ambidextrous, shoot with left eye and have learned to leave both eyes open because.......my mascara smudges when its muggy out so when my right eye is closed and I end up with a black eye! LOL

As a sports photographer I've had to train myself to shoot with both eyes. The reason is that sometimes I have to keep an eye on something happening on the other side of the camera. I always keep both eyes open so I can see more action on the field.

It's good practice to keep both eyes open when shooting. If you find that your non-viewfinder eye is dominating, close if for a moment til you're seeing with the viewfinder eye. Again, this may take some practice, but you can train your eyes. Then the left eye right eye issue won't matter anymore. And your non-viewfinder eye will be much happier.

Thanks! i thought i had the diopter adjusted correctly but this really allowed me to zero it in.

I teach students labeled ADD and there seems to be a disproportionately large number that are left handed and left eye dominate. 35mm cameras were a problem of sorts because the wind lever ended up being near the right eye and they had to move away from the viewfinder to advance the film. With built in autowinders there was a lessor problem and now all cameras have the auto-advance (shutter cocking) so there shouldn't be much problem. I do however suspect that the viewfinder information may have been, maybe still is, designed more for right eye dominate. The first thing I have EVERYONE do is adjust the diopter correction to the eye they'll be using. Some people are amazed at how clear it gets when this is done. Takes just a minute or two.

For those who need it here is my recommended procedure: With your glasses on, if you wear them, look through the viewfinder at a clear sky or blank wall and adjust until viewfinder lines (focusing screen) and focus boxes are as sharp as you can get them. Then focus the camera on something like a sign or text and try to fine tune a bit more. You may be amazed! I find that I have to re-adjust mine to lighting conditions sometimes. I'm 68 and don't have the young eves that are more flexible.

I'm right handed--left eye dominant.
In the old days of manual only focus, I used my left eye for better results.
I shoot pistol with both eyes open.

yes they are and i have found myself more than once trying to see if I can cut left handed (though I am right handed) with a scissors just to "see if I can do it" It never works!

I'm left side dominant. Cameras, like many other things are designed for right handed people: scissors, can opener, those skillets with the pour spout on the "wrong" side, etc. The polaroid camera was right handed. Power tools are all right handed and dangerous when used by a left hander. It's why left handers are more creative. They have to be!

True left handed scissors are available, my wife buys them for sewing, both blades and handles are reversed, Bob.

I am right handed/left eye dominant. I shoot a gun right handed and i guess i have trained myself to used my right eye for this because its pretty hard to aim down a barrel with your left eye while shooting right handed. However when using my camera I naturally use my left eye. This kind of sucks because my left eye is visually weaker than my right eye. Thankful for diopters! What a mess! I keep both eyes open when photographing. I tryed to use my right eye and leave my left eye open but this gives me sort of double vision and I really can't even see much of what is in the viewfinder through my right eye. How in the world do people use there right eye and keep both open! Never had problems with the viewfinder fogging in cold weather. Thanks for the interesting thread Old Timer.

How many of you out there are left eye dominant, and do you find it a problem some time to see thru the view finder properly under certain conditions, especially in cold weather when your breath steams up the view finder. I do not care for live view most of the time. The only way I can use the right eye is to shut the left. Also your nose seems to be in the way.

I am left eyed but right handed. It's just that my left eye has slightly better vision than my right. I don't find any real problems with using my SLR.

I have lost some sight in my right eye due to Macular Degeration. It took a while to get used to using my left eye, but now I just automatically do it and don't seem to have a nose problem that I ever noticed either way.

I saw a bumper sticker that said we were all born left handed until we committed our first sin. I must have started young.

About your breath fogging up the viewfinder, you might want to try a rubber eye piece (see hoodman.com). It completely shields the viewfinder (actually to keep sun glare out) but it should also keep the piece from fogging. Works for righties and lefties.

I shoot left hand also, but I do not have to shut my right eye when using my left, but if try use my right eye I have to shut my left. The M1 brass is hot when you are shooting left hand and it is landing on your right arm.

Left handed shooter for both my camera and the M16 and I am with you on the hot brass...had one land inside my chin strap during a live fire and could not remove it...left a real nice scar
I leave both eyes open with the camera becuase I am usually shooting sport..this way I can see and pan with the action...also hopefully I can see any stray objects flying my way and duck in time.

Sounds like a lot of forum-ites need rhinoplasty. That would fix the smudge problem. I, however, possess a Roman nose and often do smudge. I choose to carry a micro-cloth. Saves me big bucks on plastic surgery.

It was only a few years ago that I realized that I was left eye dominant (and a righty). I have no troubles fogging up my view finder--only my glasses! Lot of times I shoot without my glasses to avoid fogging them.
