I'm guessing your thread's title is just a case of hyperbole run amuck. For your sake I hope that getting a modest discount on camera gear is not the best news you ever get.

That's me. I just like to keep things in perspective. I'm willing to bet the birth of a child or grandchild or a million dollar gift ...or maybe even world peace, would trump an employee discount on a Canon DSLR. But maybe my priorities are screwed up. A Canon 5D III would be nice. :D

Just found to today that as a perk for working for the company I work for that I get to participate in Canon's employee purchase program. My wife and my wallet are not gong to like this at all.

Get her a 5DMk3 and get yourself a 1DX. That move will change both of your lives! :D

I'm still waiting to hear what this means in terms of price discounts.
For instance there was a deal this week for a new 5D MKIII body for $2560 with free shipping.
That's less then Canon Direct charges for a refurb.

So what does the employee discount get ya?

That's a gray market price. No US warranty... no way.

Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the camera.
If I wanted one I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Absolutely didn't mean there was anything wrong with the camera... Just addressing the lower than usual price of the 5DMk3, that's all. And to your point: I have never in 30+ years of shooting either film or digital, and having owned tens of cameras, ever needed to send my camera in to anywhere for a repair. Nothing has ever broken, or worn out (knock on wood). :-)

That has been my experience as well. I've owned a good dozen combined Canon SLRs and DSLRs going back to the 70s and never had to send a single one in for a regular warranty repair.

Same here. To that, for me add about 5 Olympus SLRs and DSLRs and 13 Canon SLRs and DSLRs without a single problem of any kind at all. Grey market is a viable option, it seems, if you're a Canon shooter, want to save at least 20-25% off USA retail and don't care about a USA warranty.

With karma being what it is, the first grey market piece I buy would certainly turn out to be defective... a lemon! ;) :(

Last fall I bought a refurb Nexus 7 tablet on a whim because it was priced quite low. It came with a 90 day warranty and the thing completely died on me after just four months.

However I bought a refurb 50D from Canon Direct about 3 years ago and it came like new and has never given me a bit of a problem.
Ya never know I guess.

I bought a slightly used Canon 1DX from a friend of mine who is a pro sports shooter. The camera went to the Sochi Olympics, and showed a couple of marks and 17,800 actuations. My dealer asked Canon to refurb this piece, and I got it back after 3 1/2 weeks just day before yesterday. It looks 100% brand new (no marks), had 0 actuations, and a new USA warranty (which it had before) which is why Canon was willing to do this in the first place. They even upgraded the software for me!! ;) :D
