My sister and husband tell me that my 9yr old daughter spilled fruit punch all over my bedroom carpet and it won't come out. I go up there to find a Nikon D5100 bundle, tripod, monopod, remote, sd card, and 2 yr unlimited warranty all layed out on my bed! I am so happy and excited!
Looking for suggestions on accessories, lens, etc....
I'd like to get an external flash, and lens cover soon. In the future will buy a better lens than the standard that came with it.
I'm open ears?
Thanks!

The 55-300VR zoom or a SB 700 Speedlight would be welcome additions. Don't forget extra batteries!

I recommend an extra battery and a SB400 speed light.

The kit lens is excellent. I suggest you wait on a lens until you find out what field of view you may be wanting.

Congratrs on your new goodies. The "kit lens" is called that because it is the single most flexible lens yhou are apt to own, 18-55 is wide angle to "normal" range, killer lens for scenery, close ups, panaramic shots,
My suggestion is to get proficient with the basic kit, so proficient that every control is instinctive, read all you can and shoot all you can, then go to the next lens or flash and do the same.
One of the most fun times I had was explaining to a kid with a Canon 5 D what depth of field is and how to set his camera in aperature priority, Imagine he borrowed the camera from daddy and had nary a clue what to do with it, I finally set it to auto and gave it back to him.

first learn the gear, read the books,ne hand on the manual, one hand on the gear.
ENJOY

I got The Nikion 5100 camera for my birthday/anniversary//Christmas gift. It is way more camera then I personally can handle, which is why I am reading a lot on it . However one thing I noticed right away was that I needed a bigger or another (back up) sd card. I wasn't able to hold more then 171 pictures, so I got a two new larger sd cards. Have fun with your new toy. Enjoy it and when you learn a trick please share it with me.

Now that you have a great camera, I hope you're able to find some nice scenery to photograph. Oahu? I don't know. Is there any beautiful scenery there?

Actually, I was there about 20 years ago, and I found it to be "scenery overload."

Just enjoy it all!

If white balance is important to you, the very first accessory should be an Expodisc.

When you start looking for accessories for the 5100, check out the Nikon website. Click on the Nikon Outlet and check for Refurbished stuff.
BTW the kit lenses do a nice job while you learn your camera.
