Oh wow that is sooo helpful - but I have just checked my ISO was 3200, I was at times using my tripod and I was using not all focus points but 11 focus points.. and I tried to focus on a person and then shot but I didn't lock the focus ... I shot at 125m at F/11 - but thank you will try that..love your photos - thats exactly the focus I want - they are great - what distance should I be at ..? does it matter? were you near the stage or far..?

As JR1 said you might be using all focus points, you quote saying you where using 11 focus point, you must manually pick one. and even at 3200 ISO with a f/11 you will be slowing down your shutter speed and be causing motion blur.

As a starting point if your lens is a 2.8 set your aperture to 4.0 and your ISO to 3200 now you are letting in as much light to your censor as possible and not pushing the limits of your lens.
If you set you camera in the "AV" mode like this using only your center focus point adjust your shutter speed until you have the right exposer. Good luck and have fun!

Hi I noticed you were using f11 on a 2.8 lens!
When you stop down that far you really slow down your shutter speed and soften your shots.
I think if you try to stay lower than f8 (5 to 6.3) a larger
aperture you will get faster shutter speed and reduce the motion blur and still get good depth of field...

I have shot some dance productions at local university, using 70 to 200 f2/8
I get great results with action shots using settings 1600 or above 320 f 2/8. I was aprox 30 ft away
