What's wrong with Nikon?

I bought a new D3200 and a refurb P510, and was unable to download the reference manuals or the ViewNX2 program disks. Also, I was unsure which NX2 belonged with which camera because the programs thereon were different versions.

I called Nikon customer service, and the game commenced.

The rep did not know much of anything about NX2 or reference manuals and had to leave the line repeatedly (probably to ask someone). It finally turned out she did not know if a separate version of NX2 was provided for each camera, and I needed to download both, or if one was a later version and should be the only download. She had no idea what Nikon was asking for when they asked for a number prior to downloading (which I had not seen anywhere in the docs, had never heard of, and did not have) and could not tell me if this impeded the downloads of the manuals and NX software.

After a long absence from the phone, she told me she would immediately email me the appropriate files for download and assured me there would be no problem with download or installation.

It's been more than a week, and nothing has arrived from Nikon.

Does anyone know what's going on with Nikon?

You should be able to download ViewNX2 from the Internet as a free program. Capture NX2, however, is their proprietary program which would require payment.

I used to work for a printing company here in Chicago. We print all their advertisements from Oct - the middle of Dec plus a few in the spring. We usually print 20mm pieces each run approximately 12 runs a year. Nikon took a bad hit when the earthquake and tsunami hit. That had to cancel two printed runs. One run was already intransitive to newspapers all over the US. I think they are still struggling in many areas since then, including customer service. That, was a couple years ago, Nikon had lost some manufacturing building and other things partly why I try to support them. Hope this brings a little behind the scenes info for you.

ViewNX2 has just been updated. I had a memo from Nikon and suggesting I download and install it. (have not tried it yet)

On the back of my Nikon D7000 manual is a number.

I typed the number into Google and immediately got the DX7000 manual in pdf form.

As has somewhat been said - View NX2 is a freebie. They load one version on a CD that goes [physically with a camera. Two week later the program is updated. That version is loaded on a CD an goes with a camera. Two versions with two new cameras. As SteveR said - get the latest version from the Nikon website.

You're definitely right about the effects of the tsunami on Nikon. Major problems and delays.

I don't understand what you mean by those lines above - cancelling the print runs.

I've downloaded all sorts of manuals from the Nikon site, and I was able to save them all to my computer - cameras, lenses, speedlights.

From what I understand, the version of ViewNX you get matches with the camera so it can open NEF files.

If I remember correctly when you call Nikon there is a separate line to contact customer service about software. Listen to all options before selecting one. They were very helpful when I had to reinstall NX2 from PC to MAC.

Probably no product to go with the advertisements

I am beginning to agree. I am new to digital and chose Nikon because I had always used Nikon film cameras and loved them. But it seems to me that Canon has done a better job with the superzoom bridge SX series, and I must admit the control placements on the DSLRs feel more intuitive. ... but I am unwilling to relinquish some fantastic Nikon glass from the old days. Thanks to all for your info re dealing with Nikon download and customer service. :D
