Depending on which way you are going through Wyoming. Wind River Canyon is a cool drive and don't forget the Grand Teton Mountains

Is this a one way trip and you are staying in Oregon? I would suggest that you google each state and find out the attractions. Then do the same thing with the parks along the way and decide which ones you want to see. If you are going to Colorado, you will miss some of Utah's best canyons as they are in the southern part.

In Southern Oregon the best attraction is Crater Lake. The shortest way is up the east side of the mountains with minor attractions. If you want more, I would like to know your route.

Enjoy your trip and like others say....may take a year! Lol!

I could give you hundreds!!! Instead, I'll make 2 statements.

1) Utah & Idaho were complete surprises. You know places like Wyoming, Colorado, etc... are going to be beautiful. But Utah and Idaho were stunning as well.

2) Do not pass up the chance to go to Crater Lake.

Crater Lake is 4 hours from Portland. Are looking to stay in the Portland area? The Columbia River Gorge is great. There are many waterfalls and vistas. Hood River to visit WAAAM (Western Antique Areoplane and Auto Museum) is a great place. Portland has several gardens that offer different photo opps (Crystal Springs, Leach Botanical, and Swan Island Dahlias in Canby). Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge offers other photo opps. What type of photos do you enjoy making?

Let me also suggest two places in southern Oregon. In Cave Junction is the Great Cats World Park. This is where 70% of the big cats used in TV, movies, and commericals come from. It is worth the stop.

The other place is Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon. This is a drive through animal park and worth the stop.

Ok, the Boise Zoo has great butterflies in the summer months. It is great little zoo. I would recomend putting the Boise Zoo on your agenda instead of the Oregon Zoo in Portland.

I'd ditch the I-10 at or before San Bernardino and find my way to US-395 heading north. There are several places to head west from the 395, among them SR-120 through Yosemite. You don't want to drive I-10 and I-5 through Los Angeles traffic, and the I-5 through the San Joaquin Valley is one of the most boring and monotonous drives on earth. You can also skirt L.A. just to the north, drive to Ventura, then head up the coast route from San Luis Obispo. Amazing scenery from there to Monterey.

BTW, does "ksu" refer to a university?

While at Cave Junction go west to the Oregon Caves- take a jet boat ride on the Rouge River.

email each state tourism bureau and they will sent you information ( more than you can use)
Not a bad Idea to cover the region then plan your trip.

California, get off I5 take the coast road North. Stop and spend time at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, do a quick trip to Fisherman's Warf in San Fran head on up the coast highway. Sample some awesome wines, stop in some of the small towns along the way. See the huge redwood trees before crossing over into Oregon. Samuel Boardman State Park just North of Brookings, Or has great coastal shots. Gold Beach, take the jet boat trip up to Paradise Lodge on the Rogue River, if time permits reserve a night there, it is beautiful. Only way in or out is by jet boat or small plane.

Staying on the Coast Road stop and have lunch in Bandon By The Sea. Beautiful beach overlook there, 20 miles north is Coos Bay/North Bend. Drive out to the gardens and overlook for seals and gray whales migrating. Further north is Florence the sand dunes here are huge. Then on up to the Devils Punch bowl, fantastic photo ops. Then there is Newport, Depot Bay (great tourist trap town right by sea), then Lincoln City. Here either cut inland to Portland or continue north to Seaside which is where Lewis and Clark ended up you can also head inland form there to Portland.

From Portland you can head east to Multnomah Falls, Bonneville Dam. Here you can see huge sturgeon and salmon going thru the dam from underwater viewing platforms and watch windsurfers on the Columbia River. Then round the back side to Mount Hood ending up in Bend.

Sorry I got carried away. So many places so little time.

I didn't even get started on Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Yellowstone. Or Puget Sound in Washington. Enjoy your trip.

Hello Pappy 3502, How I envy you, find it difficult to get travel insurance in the UK so do not dare a visit to the US. About time you had a national health service(start of another round of deliberations !!!!) compatible with the UK scheme so I could make the trip.Enjoy and let us know what it is like

Hey, don't knock the D40; I still have mine as a back up camera. I just upgraded to a d7100 after taking thousands of great pictures with my D40
