When you get to the south of Oregon get off the freeway and follow the coastline to Portland, you will not be sorry. Be sure you have plenty of SD or CF cards and a spare battery. Enjoy!

Each state will have a Travel Bureau on main Highways with information about it's main features. These can be a quick way to decide what side trips catch your interest. Be selective or your Journey may take a year.

Yellowstone for sure, Lolo Pass out of Missoula, MT. Just see what Lewis & Clark wrote about and follow their footsteps.

When are you travelling and for how many days? What type vehicle will you be using--4x4, possibly, for getting off the pavement?
Do you have your main route mapped out yet and, if so, what highways are you taking?
What are the primo locations you already have lined up?
What things do you NOT care about photographing?
Can make lots of suggestions once you nail down the itinerary.

One of the most spectacular drives in the country is from Durango Colorado to Silverton, and on North through Ouray to Grand Junction. There are jeep roads (and jeep tours) out of Silverton to some old ghost towns such as Animas Forks. And if you like trains there is the refurbished narrow-gauge railroad from Durango to Silverton - well worth a day.

But also, West from Durango is Mesa Verde National Park - also spectacular, although a long climb in an RV. And Southwest from there is Monument Valley and then the red rocks of Sedona and the Grand Canyon. Of course, if you stay on the northern route you can hit Yellowstone and the Tetons - a place you MUST visit if you haven't.

Countless photo ops...good luck. My answer would depend upon what subjects interest you most and how much time you have and how much leeway you have on your route. For example, the Canadian Rockies (Banff, Jasper, etc., is arguably, the most scenic, photographic area in the world; also among the more expensive and remote areas. (Seemed like every 10 feet another fabulous 360 degree view).

More in line with direct path, Rocky Mountain National Park, Yellowstone, Glacier, Lincoln City, OR, Cresent City, etc; as I said, countless!

If you have time, avoid most freeways.

I would agree with that AFTER trip east to Crater Lake. Once in Portland, a day trip taking the loop around Mt. Hood, seeing Timberline Lodge, various stops on the Columbia River, and the mini loop to catch the waterfalls. While following coastline be sure to stop to see tide pools with their special life from the sea.

Have a great trip!

Yes: Make a checklist of all the photo-related gear you want to take.
