Do you mean the sticky hard to remove white sheet on the lid?

NO, leave the white sheet alone - it is stuck on a plastic frame.
Open the lid and you can see it's handle at the top. Lift this handle upwards and it unhooks from the lid.

Reminds me when I got my first Mac Pro Tower. I had been a PC user forever but decided to try the Mac, hoping my wife would find it easier to use. But then I could not figure out how to open the DVD tray to put a disk in to install some software. Could not find an eject button on the Tower. My wife said "I thought Mac was supposed to be easier?" Finally I found something online showing me the eject key on the keyboard. Never thought to look there...

If it is on the inside of the lid, that would be the one. It will expose a lamp in the lid.
But check your manual, there probably is a picture.

When you place your negative on the glass plate, then close the lid, the light will be exactly above your negatives, which is what the scanner needs to do a proper job!

May I make an observation? I've been hanging around the hog now for quite a while, and I just want to say 'Thank you' to EstherP! I've observed how you've answered so many questions for newbies, etc. and with such tact and right to the point, minus the smart-@#$' comments. It's folks like you who really help to build a site that one looks forward to returning to, so, for ALL you've helped -- THANK YOU!

If you actually got the carriage to move (the light inside), you must have unlocked the latch that keeps the carriage from moving.

Be Sure on that scanner to lock the carriage in place whenever you unhook and move the scanner to a new location in your house or across town.

You definitely don't want the light bar to move inside the scanner if moving it around. And then remember to UNLOCK it before using.

You DO NOT want to hear the sound of the scanner trying to move the optical light head while it's locked. Ask me how I know?

Okay folks, here's a really dumb question. How does one turn on the scanner?

Don't feel too bad. I had the same problem when I first hooked up my V500. The V500 is wonderful once I learned to use it. Some uses require removing the reflective panel in the lid. Also there is a lever/switch that needs to be in a certain position or you'll hear a clicking sound. I thought the scanner was broken at first. The V600 might be slightly different I'm really enjoying mine in the limited time I've had to "play" with it.

Had that problem with my first DSLR. Overwhelmed by the 20 buttons and switches, it took 30 minutes to figure out that the one that turns it on is labelled off/on. :)

Give yourself a little time with the learning curve. After a short while it will work wonders for you.

Found it. It slides out. I'm assuming one removes it only when doing negatives. I tried scanning a photo with the piece left inside the lid but didn't get the photo. Instead I got a copy of my résumé. No idea how I got that instead of the photo especially since I didn't scan my résumé. :)

Have the same scanner and found that using the slide or negative mask for the negative and then having the scanner software record it directliy as a positive really does great..

The best is having to use the "Start" button in Windows to turn the damn computer off.

I still haven't figured that out. I scan the negative, get a negative and reverse it with Elements 10. I don't guess it matters unless I'm losing some image quality.
