I have been reading about Adobe's newest blunder for "Photo Shop". I really don't want to send all my photos to be held ransom in "The Cloud" somewhere. I would like acquire a new PP program that is a more "down to Earth". I would like it be fully documented, with how to books, workbooks etc. I have been using Elements 8, and 10. I'm wondering what "Light room" will bring to the table. I know there are free programs out there but most have no documentation. GIMP seems to be popular, with little documentation. So, any and all suggestions are welcome.

I use Lightroom and PSE11 and there are hundreds of youtube videos on about any subject you can come up with for these programs. Lots of tutorials available with Google as well and many websites-Adobe TV being one that are dedicated to this software. Gimp is freeware and I'm told the same is true of it too though I do not know for fact as I don't use it. Good luck with your search. :)

Why would a subscription model for Photoshop result in your photos being 'held ransom in the cloud' ????

Your photos AND your Adobe software will still reside on your computer. The Creative Cloud (CC) is a repository where you download your software and it authenticates your legal use of that software.

Another good thread here on UHH:

There is a ton of documentation for The Gimp. A ton of tutorials on YouTube and some very good ones right here on UHH. As someone else said the software and your photos will reside on your computer so you can save your photos where ever you want just as you now do.

You send your photos to the "cloud" for storage, and you have to pay for this service. If you don't pay, your photos will be held for ransom. Or, until you pay up.

Bill,

You are mistaken....Adobe's Creative Cloud is not for storing your photos or data like Carbonite. Your photos still reside on your computer.

For FAQ answers on Adobe's Creative Cloud see:

You are thinking of Adobe Revel, I think. It's a service they offer, you are not compelled to use it, and some googling would have been in order before posting this

I just received the following PM today; I'm sure Kat won't mind my sharing:

Just wanted to let you know that the new edition of my GIMP book is out and it's on sale for only $5. No coupon code necessary.

You can buy a kindle compatible version on Amazon.com or a PDF version on my website at http://how-to-gimp.com/gimp-book

Here's the Amazon link in case you prefer that version: http://www.amazon.com/How-to-GIMP-ebook/dp/B00CPDQHJS/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1368...

If only GIMP ran Photoshop plugins I would be in with a grin. I have to have some flavour of Photoshop to run Colorperfect to convert my scans of negatives into positives

Your photos don't go to the cloud if you don't want them to.

My suggestion? Read the FAQ's on Adobe's site.
