My understanding is that when the next version of photoshop is released it will be CC only and you will be required to subscribe and will not be able to buy a permanent version for your computer.

If this is the case I will be considering alternatives like Paintshop Pro.

Please show me the facts. If that is true, then I will not buy CS6

Thanks Nikonian. I was able to get an answer to the only question I had which was if I went with CC would my CS6 still work or would I lose it. The answer was that both CC and CS will coexist without losing anything. Made it a simple matter for me. They also said that CS6 owners would get the ACR 8 upgrade as well.

Wendy,
I viewed a livecast this afternoon:
http://www.spreecast.com/events/adobes-big-decision

Very interesting with a conclusion, to me, that most should wait until the dust settles because of the backlash Adobe has received. It is fairly certain that Adobe will be revising their stance, not in the form of providing CS7 or later upgrades other than thru the Creative Cloud (CC) but as tailored packages (PS + LR, etc.) at a reduced price for those who do not need/use/want the entire suite of Adobe products.

It appears that Adobe will still be selling CS6 for some time outside of the CC.

Too bad they are using the term "Creative Cloud" as the software will still reside on your computer (requiring that you have a web connection to verify you have paid your fee in order to use their product.)

Update on above from DPReview:
"One final point I'd like to address is the misconception that you have to be continuously connected to the Internet to use a CC application. Monthly subscribers can go for as long as 30 days without connecting to the Internet for license validation. Users with an annual commitment can go for as long as 99 days."

One major reason for this change is that Adobe products are the most pirated software products in the world. This is one method to slow down the pirates but IMHO hackers will still find a way. (Example: recent $45 million coordinated heist from ATMs around the world).

Bad thing about the CC is that you have to download your program....those with slooooow ISP connections will be hurt.

Very interesting answer. I called and spoke to a supervisor at Adobe customer service and here is what he told me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question: Does PS CC overwrite PP CS6 or does it create a separate directory.

Answer: It overwrites CS6.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question:Being that I own CS6, if I purchase CC for 9.99 for the year and decide that I want to go back to CS6 how can I being that CS6 is overwritten,

Answer: You would un-install CC, then re-install CS6 with your original CD and serial number.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I asked the supervisor if they had something in writing and they said no but it's a fact. Can you believe Adobe at this point??

Can you find a link for this? I couldn't. Someone wanted to upgrade from PS5 to PS6, but all he could find was Cloud. I thought as of June 1 PS would be Cloud only, but I couldn't find a place to buy or upgrade.

WOW, I'm a member of www.photoshopelementsuser.com, and haven't seen squat about this. Maybe it's CS only? Anyway, that could be a huge game changer for me. Elements not so inexpensive anymore.

While the suggestion to wait until the dust settles is wise, this may be a good time to start a new topic - reviewing alternatives.
My suggestion would be to start out by a survey of UHH members for a list of functions in Photoshop that are important (Such as layers ) and then rating alternatives on how many of these functions they have, and review how they compare to PS on a scale of 1 to 10.

As I understand it Elements is not part of CC.

For you old timers remember Lotus 123 and Word Perfect? They also thought they were "To Big To Fail" You can't fight this mentality. Start looking for a replacement. It's a shame but it happens...... There are a number of more then competent other companies that would be happy to have you as a customer.......

Good shooting
