I joined this site because I am far from being a professional and would love any input by those with a different eye than mine. I thought that that is what this site is about. So in the future, if you ever see my name attached to a picture and you see a way to make my photo better PLEASE do so...

First off let me start by saying if I offended anyone by *playing* with their photos in photoshop, I am truly sorry, I can assure you it was unintentional.
That being said, it's not like I changed the original. It doesn't overwrite the work, in my opinion it just shows manipulation options. I, and I'm quite sure others, are not saying *the edited version* is better, just a different way of looking at things.
If you aren't interested in looking at your photos through other peoples eyes... don't ask for critiques. Seems simple enough to me.
One of the most fun things about this forum is to see how creative y'all are and to challenge my creativity, not only in the photos I take in the future but also how to make them look (what I perceive) as different. So in the future I may still make suggestions (mainly because I am not thinned skinned and don't take offense,so I'm not going anywhere) but I won't be posting any edits, it's not worth the drama.
First off let me start by saying if I offended any... (show quote)

I am sad that you will no longer show us your creative adjustments of other people's work. If you change your mind, please check out my Rome Night--- picture and adjust it all you want. Anyone else is welcome to do the same.

When uploading an image, if editing is desired, click the box entitled "(store original)", next to the "Browse" button. This will allow large image to be viewed & edited.

On another photo site I go to, your profile displays whether or not it is OK to edit your photos; no question that way. Perhaps there should be something like that here.

To all who enter here,
If you happen to look at a picture I have posted and see something that I can do that will improve my skills, please feel free to give guidance, edit my ohoto, but then let me know what you did so I can learn from you, and on the occasion that you might want to give me praise, feel free to do that too

There is a difference between giving feedback and critiques and editing a photo without asking. If the OP hasn't stated that edits are ok, it's easy enough to ask permission. Seems like the right thing to do.[/quote]

Who made up these rules of etiquette? Who said you should ask? I could just as easily say that forum etiquette says that it's rude to offer critique without posting an edit to demonstrate. I've been hanging around here for a while and I've seen this topic manifest into a debate because one grouchy old man took offense at someone editing his photos. No offense to the grouchy old man, his photos don't need re-editing anyway. This arbitrary "rule of etiquette" evolved from that as I recall.

If you put a photo on a public website and ask for critique then I believe it is perfectly acceptable and should be taken for granted that you can make edits and post them. What better way to show someone what you are talking about.
We're not talking about coming to your house and making you hang it on your wall. To be fair and polite, I will say that if YOU want to ask permission then by all means do so but it is not polite to infer that all those who do not do as you say are somehow committing a faux pas. MWAC, this post is not a blast at you. I just quoted your post because it clearly stated what this debate has been about.

If an individual is dead set against someone editing their photo then say so and I'm sure that everyone here will respect that but I think that permission to edit should be assumed by the fact that a critique was asked for.I can't even imagine a good reason that someone would be offended. It's not a big deal.

The only reason that I post this is that I think it is a colossal waste of time to debate this. This site is for learning about photography. Editing is a huge part of photography. Edit away I say.

P.S. I reserve the right to retract this opinion when someone produces the Emily Post book of UH etiquette.

It takes a thick skin and an open mind to ask for a constructive critique of one's image, for which one has to assume you have a great affection. In the spirit of "one picture is worth a thousand words", posting an edit along with what you did to improve (arguably) the image, by describing step by step processes, is by far the best way to convey your critique. In my opinion anyway. Words can only go so far.
