Same page! After nearly 40 years of messing with photography, I remember when Photoshop was still an evil thought in someone's mind. Not having that crutch made me work harder, plan better--and gave me mass amounts of satisfaction when the photo was processed. Photoshop is a wonderful option, but I feel using it for everything is kinda the lazy way out. I'm old so take that into consideration when reading this :-)

I have been taking photographs for over 55 years, used to do my own B&W processing and editing, and I love Photoshop. I still try to get the best possible shot in-camera, but it is never 100% what I want. I certainly do not think it is the "lazy way out", as I use it to enhance my images, not as a crutch to correct sloppy exposures or composition.

As to editing other peoples photos, I think it is an excellent way of showing how an image can be made better (or worse) by editing. An edited image plus a description of the process can be very educational for those wanting to learn.

Yeah, I wish...you're fortunate to get first-hand experience with someone who's been there and back again. But one thing...what he does is "his" technique", you need to pick what helps you develope your own style. I was lucky enough to work with a master photographer from the Twin Cities many years ago and he was amazing! I have never met anyone like him and I learned a ton of stuff from him old school! Oh, and the perfect shot has been taken by many. Mine came about two years ago with a shot of my newest grandson as he fought for his life at the Mayo Clinic. He's two now and perfect and I have shot a thousand photos of him yet that single frame still brings me to tears when I look at. To each his own I guess.

Key words were "used for everything". I use it as well I just think a raw, unedited photo is a thing of beauty. Something that was earned using your head instead of a computer program. As far as listing how one edited it, 99 percent of people either wouldn't care or not understand it anyway. Excuse my "purist" approach. It's just something I personally feel good doing. I know many won't agree with me and that's fine. To each his own.

If your are hampered by what you can shoot and the style thou can use in the studio where you work, I would recommend posting images for C&C that you took outside of the studio where you have total control of the outcome.

Find your own style.

I'm not really hampered, just that the pictures I posted are more of what we do in studio, so yes, I will be posting more of my own creativity. I did post a bunch of my backroad bumblin' on another page. All outdoor/nature/countryside finds. Looking forward to going again soon!

First off let me start by saying if I offended anyone by *playing* with their photos in photoshop, I am truly sorry, I can assure you it was unintentional.
That being said, it's not like I changed the original. It doesn't overwrite the work, in my opinion it just shows manipulation options. I, and I'm quite sure others, are not saying *the edited version* is better, just a different way of looking at things.
If you aren't interested in looking at your photos through other peoples eyes... don't ask for critiques. Seems simple enough to me.

My two pennyworth

We recently lost what I consider to be one of the finest photographer / photoshop artists over an incident involving the cloning and alteration of one of his "Photofusion" Images.
When someone of his caliber who is obsessed with what he was doing, feels strongly enough about the intransegence that he quit dishing up his masterpieces to this group of hero worshippers, its time to take a step back and make sure that if , for whatever reason, someone thinks they can add something to the photograph, then it takes just a few seconds to ask permission to do so.
Even my fiancee, Tilde531 asks can she alter/ improve one of my photographs.
Lets all be decent human beings and use a little bit of civilty and then we wont lose any more people such as "PappaGeorge" and "DB" both of whomw were very fine people.

Thanks for reading!

Ian
One of the most fun things about this forum is to see how creative y'all are and to challenge my creativity, not only in the photos I take in the future but also how to make them look (what I perceive) as different. So in the future I may still make suggestions (mainly because I am not thinned skinned and don't take offense,so I'm not going anywhere) but I won't be posting any edits, it's not worth the drama.
First off let me start by saying if I offended any... (show quote)

There is a huge difference between critique and edit.
A person posting an image in a c&c thread is asking for the viewers opinion on what should be changed to improve said image. Not giving carte blanche to modify the image.
Editing is FAR more involved and invasive.
It is a simple matter for the poster to state "edits welcome" or the viewer to ask permission to download and edit.

A full size download could be construed as implied persmission. Having a section just for edits might be a good way to go...
It is common practice to have a section on a forum for editing, separate from c&c.

a: to prepare (as literary material) for publication or public presentation
b: to assemble (as a moving picture or tape recording) by cutting and rearranging
c: to alter, adapt, or refine especially to bring about conformity to a standard or to suit a particular purpose <carefully edited the speech> <edit a data file>
