Editing other peoples photos

First off let me start by saying if I offended anyone by *playing* with their photos in photoshop, I am truly sorry, I can assure you it was unintentional.
That being said, it's not like I changed the original. It doesn't overwrite the work, in my opinion it just shows manipulation options. I, and I'm quite sure others, are not saying *the edited version* is better, just a different way of looking at things.
If you aren't interested in looking at your photos through other peoples eyes... don't ask for critiques. Seems simple enough to me.
One of the most fun things about this forum is to see how creative y'all are and to challenge my creativity, not only in the photos I take in the future but also how to make them look (what I perceive) as different. So in the future I may still make suggestions (mainly because I am not thinned skinned and don't take offense,so I'm not going anywhere) but I won't be posting any edits, it's not worth the drama.

I, for one, will miss your edits. We had such fun on "Boo-Boos" with your fixes - amazingly fast fixes. Rest assured that there are quite a few people on this forum that want to adopt you and your talent.

In haven't seen the post you are referring too with drama (or I've over looked it) but I do take issue with one statement you've just made (not picking a fight, just offering my opinion on a statement you made). You said

There is a difference between giving feedback and critiques and editing a photo without asking. If the OP hasn't stated that edits are ok, it's easy enough to ask permission. Seems like the right thing to do.

+1 - there was a big brou-haha here a few weeks ago about this very thing - and it actually broke down into four camps:

1) "Here's my photo - tell me it's great, or shut up"
2) "Here's my photo - TELL me what I can to do improve it"
3) "Here's my photo - can YOU fix it for me?"
and
4) "I can't find my picture right now, but it was really really good.."

Most people thought that if the original poster did not specifically ask for editing, it was poor form to do so without permission. However, some posters don't mind at all - but one doesn't know that until one edits Little Billy and then gets dumped on by the OP...tricky situation. But don't take it too roughly. There is no commonly accepted and agreed upon protocol that covers everything.

If a critique is asked for, doing an edit is an acceptable and clearer way to show what you would change. If an opinion is asked for, I guess you can just say there are changes that could be made and leave it at that. Over and over, we see pictures posted, opinions/critiques asked for and so many times, the response is, "Beautiful, gorgeous, etc." when that's not the truth at all. The ones I really love are the requests to "be gentle". I'm coming to the conclusion that critique requests are disingenuous. Maybe we need code words like "tell me the truth" or "lie to me so I'll feel good".

OK, I'm off topic...I do tend to ramble. We're missing opportunities to teach if we limit edits. They can be wonderfully helpful.

I fully think that if you need to show an edit, just ask. saying "hey I think you should try this, this and this... mind if I show you what I mean?"

Now that being said, I don't care if someone edits my photo, doesn't bug me at all. I might not like the edit, but if you want to take time to give it a go, go ahead. All I ask is you DON'T post it anywhere but here. Not on your flickr stream, FB, other forums. Only here.

Now we're getting into a whole different subject: stealing images and posting them elsewhere. Of course, that's wrong. However the danger of that happening on this site is small. The vast majority of pictures asking to be critiqued are not ones that would be stolen. I suppose that any picture posted here has that risk. If one loses sleep over the possible real hi-jacking of their pictures, don't post. There is no way to protect anything you post because there is software that overrides protections.

Ok Cool. :) Thanks y'all .... didn't mean to give the impression that I was involved in any drama, I haven't been. I just don't want to be the cause of any.
I agree with every statement given here on this subject. I will follow the advise. Y'all are the coolest :)

You can turn my photos into works of art anytime! Change away! People (those that need to see this) relax! Nobody is hurting anything and we don't know where you live. So if you don't like it, IGNORE IT. And move on. Good day.

I always try and make it clear up front if I'm looking to see how other people edit my pictures. That's a great learning tool for us all to see the differences.

IF someone wants to take the time and edit my picture, I'm honor. It gives me the chance to see it in a different perpestive as the OP here stated.

If I edit someone else's picture and they do not like it or others feel I did a lousy job, then I personally wish they would tell me. That's how else I can learn and grow.

Some people are thin skinned and can not bare the fact that someone downloaded their picture and tried to improve it.

I feel it's best to ask up front if it's okay and in private so the OP will not feel put on the spot.

As far as someone giving me a hard time about my edit's , hey I know I'm not perfect and it does not bother me if others laugh at my work. I'll just take it being good nature and most likely laugh along with them.
