In this picture of 2 Bald Eagles, the line around the eagles and the background look "fakeish" to me. Looking for suggestions on how in LR to make a smoother contrast between eagles and sky.

This may be beyond the purview of this group but am wondering if I can tap into it's collective wisdom and knowledge by asking for recommendations on the purchase of a GoPro or similar small, waterproof mostly video camera. Plan on using it when kayaking and for taking video when placed on board my O-gauge (mostly Lionel) trains. Confess to knowing next to nothing about them. Thanks. Mike

I suggest you look at a device that does 360 (Garmin, Insta360). For kayaking and adventure videos I would say a 360 is a must. The quality (stabilization, frame rate, AI) is amazing. I have both a Garmin Hero and an Insta360 One X and saving my money for an Insta360 One X2. The challenge is the technology is advancing quickly adding new features quickly.

Thanks for posting. Helps me do a status check. I need a new tripod and sell some lenses to buy that tripod.

Was the result the exposure you desired? If yes, what setting could you/would you have changed if manually adjusting ISO?

.

Yes, but seemed a little grainy.

90% of the time I shot in manual with auto ISO. I always take a test shot of subject, look at histogram and make adjustments with aperture and shutter speed. Yesterday in LR I was making adjustments to a photograph I stood in the middle of a cloudy day and noticed ISO was went to 2500. Seems really high. Should I do more in manual ISO?

I used 2 second timer delay. 400mm
f 5.6 ISO 1600 1.3 seconds. Manual focus in live view. Shoot in raw if you want to correctly set white balance in post processing. I had serious light pollution from where I was shooting
I am not happy with this photograph but it’s a starting point.

Thanks

The OP mentioned that he was using the back button to focus. That means that AutoFocus is engaged. Essentially never works on star shots. I've been with groups shooting at night. Not switching to manual focus is the root of about 98% of problems that folks new to the adventure suffer.

Thanks

Night sky is not a friend of autofocus. The good news is that there are several strategies that have been proven to work. The first is to focus at infinity before dark, tape your focus ring in place, and switch to manual focus. The second is to use Live View, along with the zoom function to focus (manually, again). Both Jupiter and Saturn are in the eastern sky after sunset and provide very good targets to focus on. Third (and I'm not kidding on this one) is to take a couple of kids with you. Give them flashlights and send them out 300 or 400 feet or so and focus on them. That distance will get gou very close to focusing at infinity.

My favorite is the second choice, although it is surprising how much light is available for manual focusing much later than we think, especially if you are using a reasonably fast lens.

The back button will not activate focus if you are in manual mode.

Good luck.

Trying to take a photo of NEOWISE and Milkyway with my Nikon D7500. Couple of different lens options. I put my setting on F3.5, 15", ISO 2000. Then set timer for 2 seconds (avoid camera shake). Nothing happens, doesn't take a picture. I turn off timer, still nothing. Sometimes it will work, but not often. Frustrating when you get up at 2AM to get that night sky shot. Suggestions???

WOW! This will be a amazing trip. I live in Idaho and grew-up just outside of Yellowstone. Lots of good advice above. Few bullets; 1. Be aware of your surroundings. 2. Take all signs, ranger advice serious! (every week I see in the news where someone gets too close to wildlife and get injured or killed because the don't obey warnings). 3. Get up early to get your best landscape and wildlife photo opportunities. 4. Bring warm clothes it's cold evenings and mornings. 5. If you hike by yourself bring bear spray and bell (make noise). September will be a great time to visit the parks. Enjoy!!

Thanks for this post. I've always been an auto ISO person, now I want to experiment with manual ISO.
