The capture nx d software even made my jpgs look better. Thanks for telling me to go Nikonusa.com

Our last camera shop in the big city is Bestbuy, so I went there to see the d850, d5, z6 & z7. Of course they did not carry the d5 in store and were out of stock on the others. I did get to see and handle the D750, it felt good in the hands. The canon selection that they carry were all in stock and did feel good in my hands.

They also had a good selection of Sony, it felt like a toy it was so small and light. Kinda like when I went from a Pentax K1000 to a Pentax ME. They seem to have some great specs, but are the durable?

Thanks, it would be nice to get something free from Nikon for a change.

Even though my equipment is less than desirable, a lot of the problems seem to be poor technique.
1. I did not use single point auto-focus. ( I got some great but dark pictures of the surrounding branches.)
2. I did not push the ISO.
3. I did not use a flash.
4. Once I spotted the bird, I had problems tracking it at 300.
5. I do not have access to my old Nikon capture software, so I was not capturing in raw.

Good news is I will be attending the Florida birding and nature festival next week and hopefully get to see some modern equipment. I am most interested in checking out Canon as y’all seem to like it as well as Nikon.

Thanks for your feedback

I went for a trek through some dense woods this morning and evening. I saw probably a hundred birds. Some were the usual suspects but others were Yankee invaders that I did not recognize. I tried taking pictures with my Nikkor 18 - 300 f/3.5 but because of the low light and maybe my old D40x the pictures below sub par for identifying the birds.

What is the trick for shooting in these low light situations?

I can not believe nobody has an opinion on this.

As I look at updating my Nikkor glass I am running into some of the lenses take slip in filters. I have always used a screw in uv or polarization filter. Please opine

After looking a Mark Smith’s video, I realize I’m using my D40x as a point and shoot. Looking at my pictures over the years I went from experimenting with different setting and raw image to using factory settings and capturing in fine.

I think I need to start over and work on being a better photographer and then work on upgrading the equipment as I am only using <10% of it’s creative tools.

By the time I outgrow my current equipment, no telling what new and improved cameras will be out there.

Thanks again for your input,

Thanks for the input. I do fit the hobbyists profile. 20 years ago I bought an F5, I was a darkroom purest that thought film and slides were here to stay. I now have a large collection of useless film cameras and equipment that weigh a ton. I found cheaper to buy my D40x than having the F5 retrofitted with a digital back.
Just trying to no buy something that will be obsolete anytime soon.

After many years of using my Nikon D40X it is time to move on to an FX. I was looking at some expensive new glass for nature and birding, maybe a 600 mm and it seemed silly to not not upgrade the camera body as if I upgraded later the lens may not be fully compatible.

I guess my question is I am looking at the D850 and the D5. Is there something about D5 that makes it worth the extra $$ ? Also the Z 6 and Z 7 is the mirror less a game changer?

I am not a pro but love nature and photography. I no longer work and spend a lot of time in Florida many local, state and federal parks and refuges.
