Thanks Leland. Excellent information for this. Appreciate it and will add this to my list of things to be aware of. I plan to shoot waterfalls and extended use of ND filters. Data for communication was also a concern of mine to be able to navigate as well. I am adding these notes to our planning. Thanks again. Great info.

Thanks for the information. I have a number of months yet to go (September) to look at what areas I plan to actually visit on my drive so I can make up my mind. I have that same camera body and zoom lens as well.

Thanks Mike,

I plan to do something similar as well as self-drive, once I determine the areas I want to go. I was told be sure you have plenty of gas before you go anywhere on the roads and that wind warnings need to be heeded.

Yeah I hear the winds can be an issue and you better heed the warnings.

Thanks for that info. Yeah, I hear winds are unpredictable and you have to watch the warnings on them. Thanks for the tips as well. I have some months yet before I go.

Hey gang, I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on tripods for a trip to Iceland. I have 2 tripods. One is a lightweight Dolica Proline which I have had for several years and it is very compact. The other is a Sirui S-2205-N which I am using with a Sirui K-40X ball head. The Sirui is pretty much a monster for handling weight. The Dolica can handle my weight limits, but I wondered what others had done in their travels to Iceland. My goal is to take some longer exposures with ND filters and of course capture the Northern Lights. I may use an attached speedlight if necessary. The main concern I have is wind and what others found to consider on this trip. Either tripod will be packed as non carry-on due to just the airline bag requirements for size. Thanks for reading.

So, I broke down & purchased a D850 after shooting 18 years with my D40X. The new one has so many buttons & it's heavy! Can't wait to do something with it but think I'm gonna need a lesson or two... any suggestions to get me up to speed?

I upgraded from a D750 to the 850 a few years back. Love the camera. Lots of youtube videos out there to watch. if you have not used back button focus, that is what will take you to a new level of photography. Set the camera up for this and see a new world open up on your shots. Great camera for landscape work. Once you start using this feature, you will never go back. Take you about 30 seconds to realize what you have now stepped up to for framing shots and creativity.

Welcome to the forum! Lots of good information from these guys. I too recently started drone photography. Lots to learn from a camera perspective when flying them. B&H is my main camera store for years.

Hi Marty,

I use a Sirui s-2205-n tripod with the K-40X Ball Head. I previously shot with a Nikon D750 and now the D850 which uses a RRS (Really Right Stuff) L bracket attachment for the D850. The Sirui tripods are excellent. My ball head is a bit heavy so I would not use this set up for travel when I must fly, but for any other use, this setup is great for whatever shots I want to do. Tripod is quality work. My take is decide what kind of tripod you want to work with as they can either have lockdown brackets or the Sirui type which you must screw/unscrew the legs for setting them up. Their ball head is excellent stuff and smooth rolling into lock position.

Great advice by Therwol. I would add an additional item to that list:

Insure a rental car down to the TIRES.
