Understanding the value of a good backup, IMO is more important than how knowing how your Camera, Computer or Programs manage your photo files - or any files for that matter . . . With good incremental backup procedures, one rarely loses files, until what one thought to be a good backup scheme, turns out not to be good as they thought. (For example failed backup media or media that is no longer readable by your current system.)
If only windows had file versioning . . . a feature of DEC VAX/VMS systems - made it very easy to get your original file back, before you screwed it up with some editing. I digress . . .
Learning the behavior of the photo editors - I think is the biggest hurdle (for me), but many computer users have no clue about how or where their files, photo's, music, data .... are stored/organized. I myself, don't want my photo editing program managing my files, but that's just me. For many, it may very well be the best way for them.
But knowing what's going on "behind the scenes" is indeed valuable knowledge - and will probably save those heartaches . . .
