I am aware of the impact AI will have on artists that paint. Many are concerned that all those years of training to become a good artist will be tossed aside for AI art instead, especially because people can order up anything of any size and any color scheme they can dream up. I hoped photography would not be included in that concern, but your images are really fantastic. I'm sure there will always be people who want family portraits and event photographers, and some people will still appreciate artwork done by the artist instead of AI. Hopefully, there will be room for both. I agree that the ad world will seriously reduce the cost of ads. The caution would be that AI will create a random face, possibly put it on a product, and later a person looking just like them will step forward in a litigious manner. Depending upon what the product is, the cost could be very steep. You wouldn't want your face showing up on an ad for adult diapers.

Thank you all for your expert input. I was nervous that the person at the camera store I spoke with was just trying to meet his sales quota when he suggested that zoom as a one for all solution. Your opinions are very helpful.

I just acquired a Sony A7 IV, and I'm just beginning to build my lenses and equipment. I know I need a 50mm to photograph artwork, but I also need a really good telephoto lens to bring far away shots in closer. Tamron has a new lens coming out that is a 50-400mm. Does this mean the 50mm end will work for art photographs, while allowing me the versatility of a good zoom lens for outdoor photography, so I only need to use one lens? Would this lens also be good for portrait photography? I do still have the stock lens that came with the camera. Or would it be better to get different lenses for each type of shoot?

Also, I'm interested in doing product photography. Would this 50-400mm lens also work for that?
Any advice on what basic equipment I will need to set up a working studio for product photography?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Narrowed down my top 4 picks for a new camera under $1200 (on sale, open box, or used) to those listed above. I will be shooting a wide variety of subjects from artwork, to dance recitals, surfers, to landscapes, company gatherings, to pet portraits, and product photography, plus some videos. I’ve heard great things from Sony owners as well as Nikon and Canon. Anyone have a good recommendation for an all around professional-ish camera if they could only buy one camera right now, and a reasonably priced lens? I’d like a mirror less full frame between 24-30 mp but I might be just dreaming.
Hoping for a great sale this coming holiday weekend. Appreciate any input for the right tool.

If you go to Google and key in Artist Calls, there is an upcoming photo contest that involves passages, roadways, etc. I think this photo would be a great contender, it's terrific.

All the reviews I've read make them all seem like ink sucking monsters that clog up all the time? I've discounted HP, and I'm on the fence with Canon and Epson. Anyone have any good experiences with these printers?

I am a new artist with a dozen paintings I wish to photograph and then sell copies and/or gyclees of them online. I'm not sure what's out there, or which direction to go. Some paintings are watercolor, some acrylic, and some pastel (all flat). They range in size from 6" x 10", upwards to 36" x 72". Some of the smaller ones I might have scanned. I'm not sure if scanning the large ones would be more cost effective in the long run than taking my own photos. With my own photos, at least I have the option of some minor editing in photoshop. The mid size paintings average 16" x 20" to 28" x 40". I want to offer enlargements up to 36" x 60" without distortion. I may print some on metal or glass as well.
I saw a Sony Alpha SLT-a99ii on Amazon for sale for $500. I thought the 42 mp's might do a better job although the files would be very large, but I questioned the price as all the other 42mp's sell for 5x's more. His offer on Amazon has since been taken down (he claimed his contract ran out), and to order one has to contact him instead of Amazon. Sounded a little shady to me. The other camera that sounded good is a Nikon D850, but it's also out of my price range.
Nonetheless, any advice on what camera to buy, and what lens is appropriate for what I need to do for under $1,000, is welcome. Thanks, NL
