This has been processed to emphasize the prominences (red) and the chromosphere (green). Please download the full size image and zoom in significantly to see the details.

Series showing the development of the "diamond ring" feature as the eclipse came to an end. These are not equally spaced in time.

Equipment was a Nikon Z8 and 500/5.6 PF F with FTZ adapter. Hand help, which works well with this combination because of the compactness and light weight of the lens. This lens was used with a Nikon Z7 to take the birds in my portfolio.

Beautiful work!

Some solar prominences are the consequences of active regions on Sun's surface. These are often associated with sunspots, places where the magnetic field is enhanced and the temperature cooler than the surrounding surface. This is also the location of some solar flares, where magnetic energy turns into thermal energy through a process known as magnetic field reconnection.

Occasionally prominences develop into coronal mass ejections, eruption of Sun's surface that throw plasma out into the solar system. In some cases these are oriented such that the CME reaches Earth, where the clouds of ionized gas and magnetic field can disrupt modern technology such as satellite communications

Other kinds of prominences erupt from quiescent parts of the solar surface.

There is a nice exposition of the physics and discovery history of prominences in Wikipedia.

Thanks so much! The 300/2.8 is a beast and I have recently obtained the 500/5.6PF which is about the size of a 200/2.8 and totally sharp wide open. Highly recommended for the Nikon shooter.

Hi, dhroberts,

Nice series of five images... except for image #1 which is absolutely, stupendously, incontrovertibly
mag-damned-nificent!

I’ve spent several visits at Bosque making what i consider some commendable C.I.F. (crane in flight) images...but none can touch the level of excellence you have attained with #1 ! It blows me away!

Congrats!
Incredibly well done.

Many of the summer blooming phalaenopsis are quite fragrant - see the Phal. bellina pictured above. Sadly, the fragrance can disappear when they are hybridized with the larger winter blooming species.

This blue parent was a so called coeruelea form of bellina. Not “pure” blue, but not violet either. There are many orchids with coeruelea forms, most notably the species Vanda coeruelea.

This flower has the substance of cardboard. The plant holds multiple simultaneous spikes as well.

Oops, my mistake. This is Fire Magic “Krull-Smith,” not Magic Fire.

This compact cattleya-type orchid blooms reliably on each new growth. For me under LED lights this is roughly every six months.

This resulted from the cross of a blue form with a violet form.

Hardly. This image was made from a stack of 50 images illuminated by an LED ring.

But sadly the lighting is to harsh to show it's full beauty.

This is a first bloom seedling of the hybrid P. micrantham x P. delenatii. It was grown under LED lights.

I neglected to point out that this is an orchid!
