I am not a professional scuba diver, living in Oklahoma we have one lake that has a depth on about 140 feet. I did my cert back in 2015 and have done little diving since then. We have two lakes that have visibility up to 20 feet so diving is not a passionate sport here. I do plan on taking up more diving but probably will not go for my AOW cert since I am in my 60's now and more than likely will just do some shore excursion dives with a cruise line or vacation in Florida and in the gulf near Corpus Christie. 60 feet deep is fine. I have had some training in photography in college I was a mass media communications student where I studied large format and 35mm photography for photo journalism. I have a Lumix DMC-FZ60 and a Lumix DMC-TZ4 (my workhorse since it fits in my pocket). My TZ4 does have a dive housing but it is bulky but has done a fine job underwater. It is time to upgrade and I looked at the Lumix but there were a lot of reviews about bad focusing and no GPS. I like the TG5 even if it can only go 50 feet deep, it has a aperture rate of f2.0 so it lets a lot of light in without a flash. The TZ4 has a high sense mode for low lights, you don't want to use a flash in a museum. In any case there have been a lot of great suggestions and I have learned a lot of this group. While the Nikon seems to be a great deep water camera it lacks the raw and large f-stop so it is great for novice photographers. The TG5 offers a lot more in the way of offerings for more advanced photographer especially when you decide to start editing your work. Shooting in raw mode will allow a lot of manipulation after the shoot. Hopefully the next version of the TG 5 will have a little deeper update and possibly a more powerful optical zoom.

What are you using it for?

I plan on using it on my vacations which usually include scuba diving and snorkeling. We have an upcoming trip to Grand Turk and I want to make sure I have a relatively easy camera that can go at least 50 feet deep. I am only certified as an open water diver. May consider advanced open water but 60 feet is deep enough for me for now.

I bought the GoPro Hero when they first came out and still use it today. Probably time to upgrade it. I have seen a lot of copy cats of the GoPro action cameras going for as low as $50.00 from Walmart and Amazon. Got to wonder about the quality of the cameras. Still at that price it is hard not to buy just to test the camera out. As for my original question on underwater camera's it looks like the TG-5 is a good choice. Seems like a lot of people here have experience with it and I am leaning that way too.

I am looking for a decent underwater camera, I am considering the Nikon W300 or the Olympus TG-5, does anyone have any pros or cons on these? Any recommendations?

Thanks
Jerry
