my two cents:

I went from a D5000 to the D600 because that was the best camera for my budget at the time. If I had the bigger budget I would have gone to the 800e. My dx lenses work ok on the fx body but I did have a prime lens that works awesome on both bodies which I use most of the time doing portraits.

If you have the money why not go to the best model out there that you can afford? The best is always the best for us photographers who never have enough stuff right? There will be a learning curve no matter which model you go to and for now the lenses you have will work on either model with some limitations.

It isn't about what camera brand is the best it about the how well the photographer does their job with the equipment they have.

If you don't know the basics of photography or how to shoot in "M" mode then it doesn't matter what camera you buy. If you shoot in a programed mode and let your camera do your work for you, you shouldn't be doing portrait photography! Go to a professional photo store and actually try out the cameras and choose the best fit for you.

If you don't know how to use light correctly a good camera isn't going to help.

I do have to say that consumers in my area won't hire a photographer if they don't have an upper end looking camera and if you are shooting portraits in my area with a camera you can buy at Wal-Mart your not going to get the sessions no matter what you charge or don't charge.

I use Nikon. I have a full frame and a dx format DSLR cameras. I do Portraits, small events and sporting events with a few landscaping jobs thrown in for fun :-). Nikons fit me better then Canons, I have arthritis and Nikon function buttons work good for me. Canons were awkward. As far as quality I got the same result I was going for with both cameras with the equivalent models.

Also around here the schools contract with a company who hires Joe Blu off the street and send Joe out with their equipment and Joe takes pictures and orders and then sends them to headquarters who processes them and ships them to the school. It is a hard market to break into around here if your not part of that major company.

As far as professional print places I use three Major Pro ones that are higher end. There is a difference in quality and customer service you have to do your own homework and your own research to see who you want to use.

Most of the professional ones will do professional samples for you to try their service. I will not use Snapfish, Walgreens, Wal-Mart or a local in house place because of their poor quality compared to the pro labs.

So my advice is
1) learn to be a real photographer and the real art of taking pictures before buying a DSLR.

2) Test the DSLR out side by side before buying a camera

3) research and make an informed choice when it comes to picture printing. Quality over price any day of the week for me.

4) find out how many "professionals" are in your area and get to know some of them. They are a valuable resource!

I went from the Nikon D5000 to D600 the only thing I have noticed that with my larger DX lens (105mm-200mm)on my D600 causes a lens vignette on my pictures which actually looks really cool if your into vignette photo's.

I use my D600 for portrait work 98% of the time and normally only use my 50mm 1.8 prime lens which takes awesome portrait pictures on both cameras.

I wanted a full frame camera for professional quality portraits that's why I went for the D600 but if you don't need a full frame camera and are happy with the quality your getting out of your current DX sensor then why spend the extra money on a body and then more on lenses it would make sense to up grade to the D7000's series and save the bucks for even more awesome glass or accessories.
