I have used this outfit before. They are in Los Angeles. They recovered 5 Tb of pictures on one sea gate drive that failed. On the second drive I sent them it was too damaged to recover and only paid a service charge. I recommend them. Try them out!
I was in Turkey late October, early November leading a tour group to Istanbul and the Black Sea. This was my seventh trip to Istanbul since 2010.
It’s a beautiful city and the people I’ve encountered are very friendly. I have not ever felt unsafe in the places I’ve visited.
Unless you know the city well I wouldn’t travel alone but I’ve never felt threatened walking around Taksim square in the evening.
If you do decide to go please be aware that there is a massive renovation program on Byzantine sites in anticipation for the International Congress of Byzantine Studies in August 2021. Some areas of Agia Sofia and Cariye Camii were cordoned off for the renovation. Many Byzantine sites in the Black Sea area were also closed for that reason.
