Just upgrade your phone...easiest way.
Some of the newer models are amazing...and you will get two or three focal lengths and massive amounts of tech.

Good suggestion. I use my iPhone 15 pro max a lot but it is much more expensive than a camera with fixed lens.

The Nikon "Superzoom" cameras (P900, P950, P1000) are all fixed-lens cameras with as the name indicates, have awesome zoom (up to 83x) from about 24mm-2000mm.

I have to agree. Get on the Nikon email list. They have refurb deals a lot. I bought a $350 camera for $99.

Or... why not just ask your friends on UHH. That's what friends are for. But, obviously, not all on here are "friends." Some prefer to be snarky.

I agree and I know a lot of members come here for information but in a discussion with someone about something they said, "just go straight to the source". That way you get an accurate and up to date answer.

I did try recentering the focus point (the red square). But that did not resolve the not-focusing problem.

If you bump the Focal ring to slightly change focus it won’t subsequently auto focus? I have not noticed that behavior and boy does that does sound annoying. What the heck? I wonder if there is a setting somewhere that controls that behavior?

FYI my won’t-auto focus issue was resolved on page 1 by Orphoto.

Very annoying!! I find that often I need to recenter the focal point.
I have asked many and no, there is no way to override this. At best, you can reprogram which button you want to use to recenter the focal point.
I don’t know why they did not put a lock on it.

Ford vs. Chevy vs. Tesla
Personal preference.
Check the specs on all cameras considered, make sure they meet YOUR needs then get your wallet out.

Odd it WAS working.

I pulled it out of the drawer and swapped lenses before turning it on. Would not autofocus. Toggle M/AF switch on lens. Still won’t autofocus. Power cycled, no good. Swapped back to 24-200mm and it still won’t autofocus.
Checked menu:
A6 AF Activation is set to AF-ON only

But pressing the AF-ON button does not activate the focus system.

Anyone had this problem or have any suggestions?

Just to ask, did you check the focal point. I found on my Z9 that I bump the focal ring to move the focal center and it won’t focus jntil I recenter it.
I find this to be the biggest issue with the Z9.

I have used the free trial sites. You just need to read the fine print. Most will say free, which it is for a trial period. Then they will charge you some ridiculous monthly fee if you do not cancel.
I just recently used 2 sites to generate a lease addendum. Gave my CC. Generated my addendum, printed it and canceled both trials. Got email confirmation of cancellation.
If it is the only place you can get the manual and you need it, give it a shot. You can always dispute any bogus charges if they occur.
Just make sure to cancel before the trial ends.

I have been using Elements for over 20 years and find that it is more than sufficient for my needs. Have usually upgraded every two or three years. My latest version is 22 and tried to upgrade to 24 but found that my desktop OS wasn't able to use the newest version of ACR. My desktop is nine years old so now have to decide, new desktop or older version of Elements.

Wow! Both are ancient but if they work...

Annual or monthly payment plans are available.
Are you saying that when paying monthly an annual contract is still required? I'm asking because I don't know. I pay annually so as not to have to bother paying every month.

I have an annual membership but pay monthly in case for some reason I need to terminate the subscription. Not sure if you get a refund if you pay an annual fee and cancel.

Here is how the D850 with battery pack and 200-500mm would sit in the camera bag.

The lens weighs about 5.5 lbs.

easy to see how a good jolt could potentially bend the mount on the D850.

The longer the lens, the greater the torque that can result from even a small tangential force. The 200-500 is both long and heavy. I can imagine it would produce enough of a lever arm to bend a mounting. It had nothing to do with the engineering, under normal operating conditions.

Exactly!

Sounds like a poor piece of engineering when a camera lens and bend the mount it is supposed to be mounted on. Especially when it is stored and unused. What happens when it is out of it's case and being used and moved about.
And I use old Nikon equipment.

Far from what is my situation.

My camera equipment is not stored and unused in a camera bag. It is in the camera bag only when I am going on a photo shoot.

Take my recent trip to the eclipse. Loaded D850 and Z9. 80-400mm, 200-500mm, 14-30mm and 28-300mm lens plus battery packs, extra cards, flash light etc. that bag got put into taxies, loaded in cars, put in 3 plane overhead bins, removed from 3 overhead bins. Taken up and down steps, unpacked for testing, repacked, unpacked for the event, repacked after event.

If the D850 with battery pack had the 200-500 lens mounted on it in the bag that would have put a lot of stress on the camera lens mount.

When I return from an event, all comes out of the bag, gets cleaned settings checked and put on a shelf for me to select what I need for the next shoot.

Far from “stored and unused” in the bag.
