Tool & die maker by trade, mechanical designer by choice. 25+ years in CAD.

My time outside of 3D modeling is spent filling hard drives with images of whatever peaks my interest. Mostly youth sports over the past 15 years (3 kiddos getting closer to leaving the nest than I like). Lately landscapes and architecture have been creeping back into interest since my days in high school and the Pentax issued to me. Not missing the smell of chemicals and safe lights in the cave. One could say I have embraced the digital world.

Nowhere near the talent that most of the posts I have trolled but interested in becoming better and learning new techniques. Glad I found Hog alley. This is going to be fun.

You might consider renting a Tripod and possibly other equipment THERE in Australia. Say a 500mm Prime Lens for wildlife and the Tripod.

I agree with lamiaceae. Visit a shop upon arrival. Tell them what you're going to be shooting and where. They'll be more apt to recommend the right equipment to rent and you won't have to pack or be concerned about equipment you have purchased. I did this on 3 different trips to Europe.

I find that PS is more tuned to the graphic designers. If you are going to work for a GD house or a publishing house and perform heavy pro image manipulation and integration, then PS is the choice. Keep in mind that companies usually supply this type of program for their staff and the individual dose not have to absorb the cost.

LR (in my eye) is directed more toward image clean-up and refinement than altering. It's lightweight and easy to use with less learning curve.

Recently I have been using Polarr. It works cross platforms, on pretty much any device and very easy to use.

Keep in mind that I'm a pragmatic realist and don't believe in altering my images to great extent and I lean toward programs that assist with cleaning up my mistakes rather than producing something that wasn't the intent. My daughter downloaded the free version of Polarr yesterday and was off and running with images she shot for a portfolio she will work on through her summer vacation from high school preparing for media arts education post graduation next year.

In my opinion, if you're a beginner to enthusiast, keep it simple. If you're anything beyond that, you better acquire and learn PS because that's the industry standard.
