not sure what kind of pictures you are after in what lighting conditions but the 18-55 and 55-200 kit lenses have worked quite well for me in good light..

Thanks, Mudpuppy. I am thinking I'd start with a wide angle and expand from there. That would keep me busy indoors until the snow melts, then I could consider a longer lens for the critters.

What part of Mi do you call home? I'm up in the Keweenaw Peninsula

I am dead in between Detroit and Ann Arbor so I am in Southeastern Michigan. A gun toting redneck dangerously close to liberal territory.

I use the Airbak Focus Tech: http://airbak.com/products?cat=airbak

Been all over the world with this backpack and it works great. Inexpensive. I have rode with my motorcycle in the mountains. I have rode 4 wheelers in the California desert. Trek'd all over Germany and Canada.

The truth is you can do something like that, all you need is a camera and an open mind. Just go out and shoot at the trees, beautiful homes, cars, animals, flowers, anything that your eye catches. I'm posting here a couple of pix just to give you an idea... this day it was color that kept catching my eye from the building's reddish tones to the colorful bags of chips. Feel free to give me some feedback on my photos please.

It drives me so crazy all the time when I see awesome buildings like your shot in New Haven, CT and there are all those wires everywhere making it impossible to get a clean shot.

1.8 imo.. 1.4 is just a lot more money especially if you are not going to use it anywhere near it's potential.. i have 35mm 1.8 and it does me well..
