I live off-grid, as do most of my neighbors. One neighbor that has 40 acres and existing power lines already cross his property on the way to an oil well, was quoted $15k just to connect. I sold him a complete system for less than $15k. He did all of the installation himself.
Well, I'm a dealer so I paid probably half what you did. Or less. Plus, I installed it myself. No labor cost. I have paid a few thousand dollars for batteries, but I learned that by keeping them at least 80% charged allows them to last 20 years. My total cost out of pocket is far lower than a utility bill.

For those that chose not to sign up for the perpetual debt of the grid, charging an EV is free. I haven't had a utility bill in over 20 years. I run welders, compressors, and my house.

It's a mystery to be why anyone would connect to the grid. Except welfare recipients and rentals. There is no need to pay a big installation charge. You can do it yourself. A solar system is almost as complicated as a flashlight. Batteries operate everything through an inverter that converts battery DC to household AC. Solar panels keep the batteries charged. A charge controller makes sure the batteries are not overcharged. No need for a certified electrician. Buy the inverter and charge controller off of eBay. Buy solar panels and batteries local. Remember that dealers get 35% to 50% off so be a dealer.
I am off-grid. I supply 100% of my own electricity and no one tells me what to do or demands money from me. I save thousands of dollars every year and have for 20 years. My power NEVER goes off unless I turn it off. I run compressors, welders, etc.
