I recently purchased a Canon G12. Excellent condition with low shutter count. I'm learning the various functions but have found a problem that I hope some forum member will have a solution for. I have tried to turn on the flash but nothing works so i decided to reset the camera to factory levels. When I tried the reset its says it's busy. Where do I go from here?

fstop220, before throwing around a number of hoghhanded remarks, perhaps you should go back and reread my original post. At no time did I suggest that the photos that I was referring to were my own. I was talking about the book purchased from the instructor.

I attended a class on Sunday put on by the National Geographic Society about travel photography. I also purchased a book on nature photography authored by one of the instructors. Lots of really great photos with the metadata for each one. In just about every instance they are underexposed by 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop. Should I consider doing this as a standard setup or preview my shots in manual and expose accordingly?

I have been on this shoot three times this year, January, May and three weeks ago in October. Hope and pray for snow. I would shoot in RAW because the lighting will change a great deal throughout the day. Stop by your local grocery store and buy the insulated bag for frozen foods and keep your camera/lens in it. The two cars for the photographers are heated but the distances from one runby to the next are usually short. They don't usually allow standing in the vestibules when going from one location to the next. I haven't signed up yet because I'm waiting to see what the weather is going to do. If there is snow and cold you will get spectacular shots especially Helmsetters Farm. Have fun and maybe I'll see you there.

I was there last year and shot a number of shots from the deck of The Maid of The Mist using a Storm Jacket to protect the camera and lens. Great cover and enables you to take pictures in really crappy weather.

This was done in my LowLight Photography class last April. This is the Burnside Bridge on the Antietam Battlefield.

Camera on tripod, electronic shutter release, shutter on bulb setting, ISO 400 f-8 Time approx. three ande a half minutes. Bridge painted with handheld spotlight. Actual light on for about 30 seconds, then off for 30 seconds and so on

Go online to Amazon aqnd get a Storm Jacket, they come in different sizes to fit your camera and lens combination. They fold down flat and fit in their own pouch. I used mine at Niagara Falls on the Maid-of-the-Mist boat ride, shot pictures of the rim of the falls and everything stayed dry, great product.

Take a polarizing filter to cut down on glare and an extra battery ot two. Set ISO to 100-200, auto WB and either aperture or shutter priority. Dial in +1 or 2 stops overexposure so snow is pure white and not dirty gray. Check your histogram and blinking highlights so you don't go too far and blow out your highlights.

Then rule of thumb for snow/beaches or areas like this is to overexpose by one or two f-stops. Take a test shot and use the one that looks best. You can also get a grey card and use that to set your white balance.

Make a trip to your local hardware store and ask to see their selection of rubber o-rings. I had the same problem on my Nikon 18-200 and pretty well took care of it with this solution. Measure your lens first so you can get a size that fits snugly.

After reading a lot of articles on teleconverters for Nikon cameras, I chose a 1.4 based on overall loss of f-stops. I bought mine on ebay for about $150, Kenko I think. It works perfectly. My $.02
