Well said sir...

I am from Chicago and worked for Citicorp out of 399 Park Avenue for many years

I bought my first SLR, a Nikon F3 and assorted lens, at a Times Square camera store in 1981. It’s an experience I will never forget.

NYC camera stores are sharks. I was there negotiating for 3 1/2 hours but I finally got a good price but I’m not sure it was worth the 3 1/2 hours of my time…

(-;

I fully understand how unnerving it can be dealing with ‘sharks’ and I also understand that sometimes you just would rather pay the premium of dealing with honest folks.

I’ve done both, and what drives which way I go at any given time when I have to make purchases is what my cash flow looks like...

Sometimes I need, or want, something but cash is tight so I jump into the frying pan and hope I don’t get burned!

But as Kenny Rogers sings...

“You gotta know when to hold them, when to fold them and when to walk away”

I’ve been scanning this website every time I receive an email and have found it entertaining and in many cases informative.

I have never posted a comment but I will now regarding Abe’s…

I research everything heavily before I buy from anyone online. I am a systems analyst, programmer and software engineer for nearly 5 decades so I am pretty detail oriented.

I bought several Canon lenses L series from Abe’s. I requested on the phone when I placed my order that I get the US warranty. It cost a little more, but it included hood, endcap, lens case and lens cover.

All accessories including the lens case that comes with some L series lenses were authentic Canon gear.

Even with the additional cost of the US warranty, I still saved hundreds of dollars.

The equipment arrived next day and as requested. I double checked the serial numbers with Canon and they are legitimate and are covered under the Canon US warranty.

They can be repaired at any Canon authorized repair center so I definitely wouldn’t purchase their in-house warranty.

Yes, they are bait and switch experts which is annoying, predatory and unethical in my opinion.

If you don’t know what to ask for you will likely get screwed.

But if you hook up with a sales person and get their name and extension number and place your order through them always specifying you want the US warranty, you will get exactly what Canon ships with all their lenses in the same retail packaging.

They also offer military discounts.

In case you’re wondering, I have no connection with Abe’s other than being a customer. My wife and I own a web development company since 1994. We take our own photographs and we have about 30K in Canon equipment.

Saving hundreds of dollars, especially in this market with the world upside down, is most satisfying.

Good luck!

Warm Regards,

While 72 dpi may not be low rez, low rez can certainly be 72 dpi.

We’ve designed thousands of websites, how many websites have you designed?

You’re semantical nitpicking, while it may be technically accurate, misses MY point entirely.

I’m done here...

That’s all fine and well but our clients aren’t that educated. They continue to send us low rez, out of focus, badly composed and poorly lit images so your ‘point’ is moot.

Hello TheDman,

Re-sampling images for the web can be whatever you want them to be...

My point for Jimmy was NOT what DPI to use, but to take the photos hi-rez, then simply pass them along to the webmaster to make the decisions on size / re-sampling based on the needs of the website and the webmasters choices...

Hi Jimmy,

As a professional web developer for over 24 years, I can tell you that most of the responses you have received so far are technically correct answers to your question and very useful with regard to sizing and/or re-sampling images for the web.

However, you stated you are providing photos for your church webmaster. Again, as a web developer, we always appreciate receiving the highest resolution photos available to place on a website. Hi-rez photos give us enough to 'play with' when making decisions on placement on a web page.

We shoot nearly all of the photos we place on our clients' websites and we always shoot at the highest rez settings (Sony Nex-7, Canon 5D Mark II, and of course iPhones) and resize / re-sample to 72 dpi as needed with Photoshop / Lightroom or web development platform image tools when placing the image on a web page.

Nothing is more frustrating than getting a 72 dpi image from a well meaning client (that needs to be made larger as a 72 dpi image pixelates very quickly) when you need to make it larger to ‘fit in’ with the web page content (copy, graphical design elements, photo animations, other photos, etc.)

So, unless your church webmaster doesn't know how to resize / re-sample images for the web (unlikely), let THEM decide how best to use the photo and give them enough rez to work with.

Of course, if your church Webmaster is learning too, simply resample the image to 72 dpi for them but keep it big so they can resize / crop it as needed to ‘fit’ on the web page which is quite easy.
