I have the Canon 10-22mm and enjoy using it a lot. Am currently trying to decide whether to get the 70-200 IS f4 or f2.8. Weight and size are the main sticking points. Checked them out in a store this week and there is a considerable difference in both these areas. Thankfully have a friend with the f2.8 (non IS) to trial in the very near future. My photography is water sports (surfing) at one end and insects at the other!

Here are a couple of pictures I took, in SF, a few weeks ago. I was pretty far away and waited for over 1/2 hour for the surfers to paddle out to the waves but had to leave before they made it. I haven't cropped these and took them with the 70-200 f4

I think I really want that 100-400. I keep looking at it and trying not to drool :)

Keep on drooling, that is what it is all about, just one more fix.

I know, right? :)

I bet you could recover your original raw files. I use a free program from ZAR and it does an amazing job and did I mention that it's free :) I "always" dump my raw files into a file on my desktop and then format my card. I was out of town and dumped them into a Picasa web album from my iPod. I don't know what happened but just one of the photos was really small. All the others transferred fine. Of course, the one picture I really wanted was the one that was too small to print. The pictures I had taken was over Christmas. After that set of pictures I formatted my card and we went to San Francisco. So, not only had I formatted my card but I also took other pictures. It recovered all of them plus some pictures I had taken in 2011. It was crazy but I was thrilled!

I bought the Canon 10-22 before I went to Italy, a few months ago. It wasn't as great as I had hoped it would be. There was a lot of distortion and while I could fix most of it in PS it was a pain to have to do it. I just sold it to finance another lens yet to be determined :)

I'll second the Canon 70-200L f4 except mine has IS. It's a fabulous lens and I would buy that over that Tamron any day!

I hate to state the obvious, but you have already obviously cropped the original image to the overwidth view posted here. Your D800 has the standard 3:2 ration sensor that will produce a 4x6 print with NO cropping. A 5x7 will require some cropping on one or both ends to fit the print format. I suggest going back to your original image and properly cropping it to the print proportions you are trying to achieve.

I was wondering the same thing. If you took the photo then you have all of the size to work with.

I had the 2.8 (on a 7D) and sold it because it was too heavy for me. Admittedly, I am a "girl" and don't have the upper arm strength that some men have. I missed the focal length so I bought the f4 version with IS. The IS gives me a couple of extra stops, handheld, so it works for me. I love love love this lens. It is super sharp and the photos are beautiful! Why don't you rent each so you can see which one you would prefer.

I did learn more about removing backgrounds thanks to some input, also, after seeing some of the work with Portrait Professional, I bought a copy, on sale for $39.95. Here are 3 shots after running them through PP.
Thank you to everyone who gave me "constructive" criticism.
( and yes, the posing was all my fault. I will have to read up on it before I put her though that again. )

You did a great job and are a very fast learner!!

Someone emailed me the attached photo and asked me to make it into a nice picture. He's also very particular about it being perfect although it does not need to be large. I'm not having a lot of success with it. I'm attaching the original file. I can lighten it in photoshop, adjust the contrast etc., but is there anything else anyone can think of to do to save this picture for him?

It's a good thing he doesn't care about the size because what you uploaded is about 4" x 2". Did you try doing some adjustments in ACR? I opened it in ACR (CS6) and was able to clean it up some but it's a really really bad picture.

Everyone I know who started out with something other than PS ended up switching to PS as their photography progressed. My advice is to start out with any PS product so when you are ready to "grow" then the learning curve won't be so difficult.
