I recently moved to Siesta Key, Fl and tried my hand at photographing boaters last weekend for the first time! Fairly happy with how they turned out (considering my ancient camera 😬) All shot with my ooooold Canon Rebel XS, 75-300mm lens- settings ranging from 1/1200-1600, f/4.5-6.5, and ISO 100-400, edited in Lightroom. CC welcome and appreciated! 😀

Thank you all for your responses! I haven't had a chance to read them all, but will on my next availability and will respond accordingly. I did, however, want to add a few things and clarify a few others while I have a moment. The budget I mentioned was for the lenses only as I will have to buy the 5DMIV new since I can't find it used for a reputable store. I will definitely look into KEH. My total budget is around $5K. Also, I shoot professionally full time mostly for one organization but have only been doing it since last October. Although, I'm new to professional photography, I have been shooting manual on an older Rebel since 2010 and crappy amateur equipment prior to that. And that brings me to what I have been shooting with since October: Canon T2i Rebel with a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS, Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS Kit lens, and a Canon EF-S 28-85mm lens.

My requirements for new lenses and camera are this:
-Must be able to blow up shots to banner/billboard size
-Must be able to shoot super fast moving objects with very low lighting at times
-Must be able to shoot events with performers and people outdoors and indoors with low lighting at times(outdoor at night or indoors)
-Must be able to get wide angles from squatting down in front of the crowd almost underneath the performers on aerial rigging or on the floor right in front of me

I've attached a few more shots so you can see the lighting and fast moving "objects" I am usually shooting. I feel the quality of these would be sooooo much better if I actually had better performing equipment.

For the fast focus of sports, OEM glass - especially with Canon - works best - since Canon does not share it's algorithms .....

Thank you for your recommendation! I was considering Tamron but don't know much about them. I looked those two up and they are both about $1300 range so I'll have to hold off for now either way.

18-135 is a cropped sensor zoom. You won't find the same zoom-range for full frame lenses from Canon. The lowlight requirement and a budget makes for difficult trade offs as a 16-35 f/2.8L and / or a 100-400L II will each eat your budget with just one lens.

The best zoom for low-light sport is a 70-200 f/2.8L, either with or without IS.
For a wide zoom for low-light, there's various versions of the 16-35 f/2.8L.

There are many prime options with wider apertures or maybe a combo of a 24-70 f/2.8L and a 200 f/2.8 prime assuming you're zoomed to 200mm anyway. Your three example images show a distance to the subject where it seems focusing on how to cover 200mm should be the initial decision and the other distances follow.

Thank you so much for your help! I cant go big on both so I'm thinking this combo will work. I won't be using the wider lens in low light much until Jan which gives me time to get the better 24-70 at the higher price point. I won't be able to use a tripod so thinking the IS will help. The 70-200 2.8 IS I and IS II look great but out of my budget at the moment. Do you think these will be ok? I also can't find the body used but the new comes with a lot of extras that will be helpful to have.

They don't have the camera body at the moment but I will check for the lenses! Thank you!

Hi pros! I do lots of low light sports photography and need help!

2 questions:
I am getting ready to upgrade to a Canon 5d Mark IV and not sure if I should buy used or new. I can get a damage warrantee with new from b&h but not so sure about used. What's the better option?

I also need to get full frame lenses. A lot of what I shot was wide @ 18mm, 70mm, and @ 250mm on my crop sensor so I'm thinking to get something in the 18-135 range and also 100-400 range but my budget is around $2000 for both if I get the body used or $1200 if I get the body new. What are the best lenses for low light sports photography that will fit my budget??? Should I try an all in one? And should I get new or used?? It's so confusing!

Wow! Thank you all for saying hi and for your positive comments! I'm definitely still learning and very much appreciate feedback. For now, 😉, I am shooting with a Cannon Rebel EOS T2i and using Cannon lenses...24-85mm, 18-55mm, and 55-250mm. I'm still learning the differences in quality and also what camera to invest in in the future (how I stumbled across this forum 😁). From my understanding, being that I do so much in low light, a Cannon Mark D7iii would be ideal with the full frame sensor and much more af points, faster shutter speeds, etc.? It's quite expensive and wondering if the mark D5iii used would do the trick? Very confusing lol!

Hi! ❤

I recently stumbled onto this site while researching camera advice and am loving it! I'm so happy for the resources and galleries provided here. In the past, I've always enjoyed shooting for fun but recently began doing more and more photography work for a local Circus Arts organization, shooting performances, classes, etc. It's has been incredible and challenging and I learn something new everyday.

Glad to be here!
