The lens part I have no problem with, I have shot the D5300 for about five years but have not kept up on what has came on the market sense then.
I have signed up for photo journalism at a small school near me and $1200 for equipment is part of the package. At 74 years old the Nikon D5300 would last me my life time but why throw away the $1200 if I'm paying for it anyway. I thought I could save a lot of time on research, maybe not. I do know from experience I need product the if not affected by the dust. At what level do the dust free cameras start.

What focal length are you shooting at the dirt tracks and auto races? Without knowing your shooting environment it is hard to recommend a lens for the track and races but I'm thinking you probably need a faster lens for that. The lens you have should do ok for flowers unless you want to get into macro level on them.

I now have a Nikon D5300 and a Nikon Nikkor 18-140 mm. The $1200 is for the camera only or camera and one lens if I get a camera that won't accept my lens. One other question, the speed-lights don't seem to do a very good job what is the brand name of the flash or strobe that look like the old flash bulb unit that reporters used years ago. flash would not included in this budget.

With a budget of $1200 what should I buy. I mostly shoot dirt track auto racing and flowers.

I have never charged Family, but I may change my thinking on this now that I do more selling of my work. My brother-in-law has a auto repair, he's not free for my car, and an Aunt has a grocery, no free food there. I'm retired from my "day job" and what I sell keep my hobby affordable. I just made some Christmas cards for my Sister and she paid the cost even though I did not ask, but that does not by the lens, lights, backdrops and other studio equipment I need because before I got to old I shot auto racing and did not need inside stuff. I called the four people in our family that own their own business and they seemed to agree that Family is Family and business is business and one should never be a burden on the other.

I'm not sure what the law is in Iowa but I do know that after Amazon opened an office here we now pay taxes no matter what state they ship it from.

If you have a brick and mortar near you it is almost always better, even if it a little more expensive. You have a friendly face to look at, a person that knows you and your equipment, a place to make your complaints and know they are hearing you, and be able to watch someones reaction when you tell them how much you appreciate the great service and for being there when you need them.
