Could you please give us some info on your kit and settings. How did you get the sky so bright and yet the light from the light house not overwhelming the night sky background. Great pictures.

There is no lens for Sony full-frame that includes the 18-85mm range. You would have to get the Sony 24-105mm (great lens, I own it) and pair that with a 12-24mm or 16-35mm. There are two in the latter category: Sony GM 16-35 (the better of the two) and Sony Vario Tessar 16-35. There are no third-party lenses yet that will come even close. Tamron has a 28-75 and announced a 17-28--probably available in fall.

The B&H web site is great to do this kind of research--it includes detailed search parameters.

Why do you say the GM 16-35 is better than the VT16-35 ? I have the A7r iii and am looking for a great landscape lens in that range. Would also like to do some astrophotography so the f range is important. I have heard the VT has the better glass but if you have experience with them I would appreciate your input.

One more question for UHH. I got an email with the latest version of Luminar called Jupiter going for $69. Does anyone use the editing software and if so would you recommend it or not? Thanks.

I recently received an email about a photography class online called How to Master Travel Photography. It’s an online course that has 8 weeks of lessons, photographers lectures and homework assignments. It costs three payments of $33 or a one time payment of $89. Has anyone taken this class and if so do you think it’s worth it or just a bunch of stuff I could easily get from YouTube. I would appreciate any feedback and thanks.

Hi UHH
I would like to learn more about depth of field and how to judge, set for situations, etc. Does anyone know of a good resource for this specifically. Or you tube suggestions too but I prefer to read as the tube guys go too fast and I find myself continuously backing up and rewatching. Thanks.

I got one on eBay that cost $13 ! It has several compartment pieces that have Velcro on the end so you can make any configuration you want or need. It holds easily my camera and lens plus extra zoom and has two zip pockets on the flap that I use for filters, extra batteries, small tripod and sometimes I make room in main compartment for charger. It’s water resistant not water proof but for what I paid it’s great and extremely flexible. I can send a picture of it or try to find it again if you’re interested.

I have had to use support 3 times in 5 years. All 3 were either my daughter or my mother in law who is 83 forget their password. All of my phone support has been excellent and you don’t wait for hours or have to go through 15 computer voice menus to talk to a real person. If you can’t get someone immediately they give you the choice of waiting or they will call you back. I have never waited more than 5 minutes for a callback. I have had many windows computers over the years and always had one issue or another with them. I have 3 desktops sitting on my porch waiting for the trash run. Apple also doesn’t have the virus issues that windows does. I used windows desktops, laptops etc for many years but my last laptop was an MacBook Pro and I love it. I also use Apple phones now. How many times did you have to call the manufacturer of a computer or software for issues? How long did you wait to speak to someone? Did they actually fix your problem? Have you ever had your computer locked up due to a virus or malicious software? I don’t have those problems anymore and I won’t ever go back. Oh and by the way we had to give that mother in law an iPad since she kept screwing up her laptop and I got tired of fixing it. Now we don’t have any problems and I have her password taped to the wall by the chair. Problem solved.

I bought a Western Digital that says for Mac. A lot of the externals out there say they are compatible with Mac iOS but that requires reformatting and luck. The one I got said right on the box for Mac and I have had no issues with connecting it to my iMac pro and downloading my pictures for storage no matter what file format they are in (raw jpg). It’s not any more expensive than the regular ones and can be found at Walmart ! They also have different size 1 tb to 4 tb. I also pay Apple the extra few bucks a month and store in iCloud and then I have google photos which is free and they have my 3rd copy. I feel safe enough with one onsite and two in storage.

Do you have any grandchildren ? I have had the same issue and nothing gets me going better than my kids and grandkids. They seem to have boundless energy and they are always into something. I have a 1 1/2 year old I have to watch every second or he gets into something. Hope you get to feeling better and back to photography.

I will be taking a trip to Iceland next summer (2019) that’s a photography workshop. I am interested in a full frame that has good weather resistance and a good selection of lenses. Preferably the lenses I would like to buy would be used or refurbished to save on price but I might buy new. I would want something that is a wide lens with great light capabilities because I will be shooting a lot in the early morning and night too. I would be doing more landscape photography than anything else. I would prefer keeping the weight down (mirrorless) but not apposed to a dslr if it’s going to give me better weather protection and lens choices. My budget for the setup would be $3,000 or close to it. I’m going to have plenty of time to learn the new one so that’s good. I would appreciate any suggestions you guys and girls have. Thanks.

At this time I have been looking at the Sony A7riii and the Olympus OMD E mii but that’s just initial research. Would a 42mp sensor be twice as good as a 20 or 24mp ? Or is this beyond the range of the human eye until you blow it up to an extremely large print ? I sometimes wonder if they are just doing new things because they can and then get to charge more for it 😂 even though it doesn’t necessarily matter.

I have the Sony A6000 and got the transfer working. I have an Apple 7plus iPhone so if you have an android this might not help you. First you download the app Play Memories from the App Store and then open the app. You do a couple of quick things to input your camera info which the app will ask you automatically when first opened and then you turn on the camera. Get out of the app and go into settings then WiFi and wait a few seconds and watch for the camera to come up in the WiFi search. Select the camera and it will connect. Then get out of settings and go back and open the app and it will ask if you want to download the photos or files from the camera and you say yes and it downloads the images. After you have set this up and gotten it to work the first time and you have taken more pictures and want them to download be sure you have the phone opened to the memories app and when you turn your camera off it will ask you if you want to download the images, you select yes and it works. Just remember every time you want to download you have to have the app opened on your phone when you get ready to shut down the camera as that seems to be the only time it asks. Also be careful because I find I have to get the images off my phone and into the cloud or store them on my computer and delete them from the phone as iPhone has limited storage (my only gripe about Apple) and you can fill up your phone quickly with the photos. I have not tried this on the iPad yet but assume it would work the same. Basically you have to get your phone to recognize the WiFi settings from the phone and once you do it the first time it remembers the camera WiFi settings and can find it again without you having to get back into settings every time. Have the app opened and ready when you get ready to turn the camera off and it will ask you every time if you want to download the images. I hope this helps and if you can’t get it to work message me and I will try and fill in the blanks.

I have been looking at the 16mm e mount Sony lens for use as a landscape lens. The problem I seem to be having is if that equals a 24mm full frame then it’s not really a wide lens is it. I need a lens that will give me a wide view with a apsc camera and even the more expensive Sony 10-18 will still only gives me a 15-27. I have looked at the Rikonon 12mm that comes in an e mount but there again I am in the 18mm range. Any suggestions? Or do I need to trade in the camera. I have seen an adapter that you can use on the Sony 16mm, has anyone had any experience with going that route. I don’t want the fisheye effect either. Am I asking the impossible? I would like to have a 14mm with a low fstop like a 1.4 or possibly a 2ish. Have I backed myself into a corner 🙄.
