It seems to me, that if you've been using a good Nikon for 4 years, you should know pretty much about composition, exposure, and the other photographic basics already. As has been already stated. learn all of the camera features from your owners' manual. Personally, I keep my camera set to auto so that I can grab it if something happens in the neighborhood, then you'll get some kind of a photograph for a record! Auto focus should be sharp if you learn to focus on the subject, then compose the pic and trip the shutter. It helps to look at other photographers' pictures whenever possible, if not in person, then in magazines, or other media. Keep your day job - photography is an expensive business!

Really good available light pictures. I used to make available light pix of bands in local taverns! I shot all B &W and sometimes ad to push the film in really dim light. Your photos are really nice!

wvatxn: I love the camera pictured in your avatar! I purchased the same model Argus. several years ago at a yard sale in like new condition, and it had a roll of slide film in which I rewound, and took back to the family where I bought the camera. It had belonged the grandfather, and they said they were probably old vacation pix from before he had passed away. My photos were nice and sharp. Mine also had the yellow filter attached!

Nice, crisp moon shot Erv. I haven't been too active lately - I'm wheelchair bound - bad feet. I still make a photograph or two on trips! Maybe I'll do some astronomical pix this Summer! TTYL!

It's a very good habit to acquire and it'll save you tons of embarrassment and you can trade it for prints. If your subject is a model is just getting started, thr prints will help her portfolio grow. The problem is that you never know what the picture will be used for, and it will save you a possible lawsuit if it's used wrong.

Nice shots! Looks like they've been in a few scrapes with motor boats! It's a shame - they probably stem from pre-historic ancestors, and should be cared for more, rather than run over by careless boaters.

Let's face the facts, a "great" photograph tells a story that is seen as the same story, whether it's seen by an American or a Chinese Citizen, or even perhaps an African in the Congo. Few photographers have made this kind of a statement photographically. Offtimes, the difficulty in capturing a photo makes it great. For instance, the raising of our flag on Iwo Jima has been inspirational to many of us. Or even the timing, such as the late Henri Cartier-Bresson's "Decisive Moment" photographs.
Otherwise, "good" photographs are made by many pros - they tell a story with their photos that pleases whomever they're shooting for. Look at what is considered a time-tested, "great" photograph more than once, and you'll see something that you missed the first time you saw it!

Nice shot! Good sharpness for such a lively subject! Hard to show detail in both highlights and such dark shadows. Refreshing to see B&W photography done so well! Good Job!

briace! Your moon shots are certainly deserving of every compliment that has been expressed on this forum. These are the images of this particular subject that we'd all like to make but fall short constantly! The barlow lens that you mentioned - is that the same lens that keeps objects from being upside down when you look through a telescope for observing stellar and planetary subjects? What size telescope did you use for these shots? Are you using an open tube without an eyepiece to shoot through?

First of all, we've established that enlargement of any image degrades the final product technically. Most of us do crop our images just a little to simplify the picture and to help the viewer see what we're trying to tell them, especially if we're not able to have the necessary lenses to crop in the camera.
When I first saw the topic, I imagined IQ as one's intelligence, which really shows one's ability to improve a picture by cropping! IMHO

Film developing in B&W is easy, but you should know how to load your film reels before you try it in the dark. Also, B&W chemicals should be used at the same temperature for best results. Color film isn't worth doing yourself - the chemicals go bad rather quickly, once they're used, keeping the solutions at the same temperature is sometimes difficult. Luckily, there are still some good labs to do this for you! Also, the big mail-order companies still carry 35mm film!

This seems more like a general knowledge exam to see if anything rubbed off and on to the students. The answers are brilliant, and, like I mentioned earlier, whoever took this test will probably end up very successful for their quick humor!
