I've been searching the internet for information on keeping camera movement at a minimum doing landscapes with a 300mm to 400mm lens. I have a great Gitzo tripod and when I use my 300mm Nikon 2.8 I notice looking through the view finder there is movement especially when the wind is blowing. I have a remote shutter release and I put a small sandbag on top of the lens and I have a weight hanging from the center column. What other things can I do to help keep movement down?

I had similar issues and eventually solved the problem. I "built" a 3 sided tent out of aluminum tubing and heavy transparent plastic (like that used to ship mattresses) and positioned myself inside the tent out of any wind, dust, or the like. I built it cheaply so that, if it got damaged or torn, there would be minimal monetary loss. I have covered it on occasion and used it for wildlife photography by cutting a small hole in the plastic for my lens to protrude, leaving the back open for air circulation. Again, depending on your design, it can successfully be used for night photography under adverse (to some extent) conditions such as light rain, heavy due, etc.

Peterson talks about that in his book, even mentions colored diffusers for different moods/scenes...

I will use auto until I've had time and patience to explore the use of the other modes with the flash unit.

I finally decided that the built-in flash on my 77D and my 80D just don't do my pictures justice, so I took my 430 out of the box and decided to learn to use it. With the camera selector in Auto, it seems that, between the camera brain and the 430 brain, there is nothing left for me to do but to compose and press the button. Is it really that simple or am I overlooking something?

Isn't a conundrum something you use for protection or so as not to have kids?

I agree with Gene's assessment of Lr. I subscribed to their monthly program late last week and admit it is very user friendly once you learn the terminology and find all the options on their pages. I have 2 mentors and they have stressed file management often.

Problem solved, thanks to Canon email. My cameras needed to have a firmware upgrade for that lens series. All is well again. Thanks for the helpful replies.

Fellow Hoggers,

I am in need of enlightenment. I have a Canon EFS 18-135mm lens with IS and AF. I had an opportunity to use the manual focus option of the lens and found that the focus ring turned freely. However, the focusing of the subject did not change. The lens was still under warranty and I returned it for an exact replacement. I put the lens on my camera(s) and attempted the manual focus option. I had the same results...the ring turns freely but makes no changes to the focus of the subject.

If any of you have this same lens, does your manual focus change the focus of the object you are photographing?

Incidentally, the auto focus works just fine.
